painting garage door

Options
I've now tried two attempts at painting our metal garage door and failed miserably :( I'm using an exterior metal mat black paint and it keeps flaking back off. I've now jet washed the door back down to original white paint and most of metal is showing through. Please could someone tell me exactly what I need and need to do now to get this right. I have wickes exterior mat for metal and exterior primer undercoat for metal.

  • When i repainted mine i washed it off and used a small roller with exterior white gloss. Lasted for years until i replaced it.

I used Farrow and Ball Exterior Eggshell on a metal garage door that hadn't been painted for at least 20 years. The label states that it's for all exterior wood and metal surfaces. It didn't require any undercoat and 2 coats was enough to cover. Though if you have bare metal showing, you may need undercoat or primer as well.
  • I used Wickes exterior gloss paint. Sanded existing surface, then two coats. Took a while but got a really good, durable finish. When I was researching what paint to use it looked as though I had to go with gloss to get a more durable finish so maybe its that?

I've done ours with hammerite garage door paint, 2 coats rollered on and it seems ok, only trouble is that there seems to be limited colours available.

As has been said make sure you sand the door to provide a 'key' to help the paint stick.
  • Hammerite garage door paint has worked a treat on mine. As stated above sand it down a bit to get a good key.

If its galvanised steel you need a special undercoat for that.
