Anything at this price level could/will be a total moneypit. You are buying something near the end of its life.
Buy on condition, don't be too model specific.
What are your needs?
If not towing a lot maybe a petrol would give you more for your money and if your miles low fuel consumption not a huge issue0 -
Both are excellent vehicles. Buy one privately with a long MOT, be prepared to throw it away after a year (but pretty unlikely). Make sure it has had any recall work done (e.g. Isuzus injector seals - Isuzu will still do it on older vehicles if not done). Timing belt should have been done at about 90k miles. Check it is dry (i.e. no oil leaks underneath).0

This, with bells on.If not towing a lot maybe a petrol would give you more for your money and if your miles low fuel consumption not a huge issue
The Shogun 2.8TD has a reputation for eating cylinder heads, and is not THAT much less thirsty than the v6 petrol - but is a lot more expensive to buy, condition being equal.0 -
Discovery 300tdi for about £800, spend £4-£500 on welding and Bob's your mothers brother.0

You might scrape a Merc ML270 for that price if you can drive an auto, they will pull 38-40 MPG even on auto, unlike the pajero they are quick and usable on motorway runs.I do Contracts, all day every day.0

A late 98/99 3.1 Trooper with Shift on the Fly would be my Choice over a 3.0. Had both, 3.0 one wasn't as reliable. Injector recall done on a 3.0 as mentioned is a big must have.. Simple to Fix... parts easily available and cheap enough. Rotten rear crossmember was my only real issue on a worked to death on farms from new 98 SWB replaced with a nice section of box section. Fuel tanks can rot in from above causing problems..
Merc ML....With anything with a 2.7 CDI Merc Engine ML or Grand Cherokee ,check around the Fuel Injectors for the Black Death... leaking injector seals. Not the end of the world but not a nice job. Looking at 800upwards for a Man to do it right if you cant.
1800 would get a you a nice 4.0 Grand Cherokee... Granted its petrol but the I6 engines bombroof and all of it's simple enough to fix... think lego Technic... & parts are cheap from the right places for decent gear.0 -
Might also be worth looking at toyota surfs. 3 litre is better than 2.4. Most will be autos though0

There's a manual diesel Grand Cherokee for sale near me that looks decent. £1000 and they're pretty much bombproof if they're serviced.0
