Chances of getting a credit card?

I have just moved back to England after living abroad for 7 years. I would like to get a credit card, basically so i can pay for my wife and childrens flights from where i used to live to come to England. I am unemployed at the moment, but not for the want of trying (whole different story).

What is the likelihood of me being able to get a credit card? I signed up to Experian last month to see what my credit score was. I know its not a 100% guaranteed etc, but my credit rating was rated as excellent according to them.

If you're unemployed you'll probably struggle.

If you are unemployed and have very little cash then getting a credit card to pay for flights is nonsensical as you'll be racking up interest - with little to no credit history you'll only get something like Vanquish or Aqua and be paying 30%+ a month on the balance. If you can afford to pay for them there are other ways if you have cash. Can they not take a little inconvenience and go on trains or coach assuming they're not on the other side of the world?

Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!” Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

how much are we talking about? With no recent credit in the UK and no income you may get a card with £200-£300 limit but as stated, if you have no job and the high interest rate you will end up paying a whack in interest unless you are able to pay it off straight away
  • I've been in the UK for 6 months myself and it seems to be impossible to get a credit card with anyone unless you have a 3 year address history in the UK for the past 3 years.
  • Hi, I live with my husband (a Brit ) in a house he owns because I couldn't go on the mortgage as I was not a British citizen and didn't have a credit rating. I am fully employed and have a permanent resident visa. I'm keen to get a good credit rating and we have a joint advanced hsbc account. I also have a normal account in my name only. I want to get a credit card that will build my credit rating but I don't seem to be able to see which is best, can someone please help?:o

There are several lenders you could consider such as Aqua, Capital One or BarclayCard.

There's a soft search tool here:

    https://creditcards.moneysavingexpert.com/?bad-credit

Whilst it's not a cast iron guarantee you'll be fully accepted (the % marks are a ball park figure only and not a hard search) it'll give you a better idea of what you may qualify for.

As these types of cards are more accessible to higher risk customers the APRs can be eye wateringly high.

So long as you pay the balance in full after each statement is generated your purchases (aside from those which are typically excluded, such as cash withdrawals) you'll incur no interest charges so the higher APRs are less of an issue.

In six to twelve months time with positive reporting on your credit files you'll be able to switch to a card with a lower APR.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.
