What is a Windows tablet?

  • One consideration I have only just become aware of is external SD Card storage and security. I recently bought an Android tablet. It runs an office suite no problem and of course all the usual apps etc. However I hadn't counted on the impact the latest Android versions have on how you can use an external SD Card in your device. Many will have thought that this is useful to add storage to the device, which it is. But Android limits what you can do with that storage. For example adding security, encrypting files or folders etc cannot be done on the external card. I wonder if the same can be said of a windows tablet? This is, for me, a game changer and in future I would err towards a windows tablet if it allows me more flexible use of the external SD card storage.

A Windows tablet running 8.1 with Bing (such as the one mentioned above) is running the same operating system as a laptop or desktop. You can do whatever you'd be able to do on a laptop with an SD card.

Also, Windows 8.1 has built-in device encryption on certain hardware types (roughly speaking a BIOS with Secure Boot and the operating system on a solid state disk) which is likely to apply to a recent tablet.

I figured that which is why I would hesitate in future regarding an android tablet.

A Windows 8, 8.1 or 10 tablet, is the same as a Windows computer, minus the mouse and keyboard, and lots of ports and expandability. It can do the same as any Windows computer of the same spec.
I had one with 2GB of RAM (Toshiba Encore) and lots of the newer ones have gone down to 1GB, which I'd rather not do. Other than that, there have been a couple of generations of Intel Atom processors in them, which doesn't make much difference, the same resolution of screen, and a few different port options - pick the one that suits best.
