Paper Share Certificates - Electronic

We still have all our shares (about £100k at todays prices) in paper form, considering what are our best options transferring them into electronic form. The majority are in my name as they were work related save as you earn type schemes, is there any advantage transferring some to my wifes name. Haven't got any plans for the money we have tied up in the shares luckily we don't have need of it yet.

You can open a broker account and send them the certificates to put into a nominee account; then you can trade them electronically at cheaper rates.

On the other hand if you only have a few shares and want to hang onto them, why not keep them as they are? At least you are the direct owner.

You can transfer some shares to your wife using a transfer form available from the company registrars (CREST transfer form? I can't remember). This should be free and worth doing if you have made gains in excess of the CGT allowance on any of the shares or pay higher-rate tax on dividends where she wouldn't.

I recently did this via Hargreaves Lansdown. I sent them some share certificates and now the shares are in electronic form in a "Fund and Share" account.

I still have some in paper form, however: only the ones I might want to sell soon are electronic.

If there are any perks associated with your shares, you should check that you will still be able to access the perks when your shares are in a nominee account.

£100k shares, all in one company?

Sell them and diversify into several broader based funds.

Thanks for the replies, the shares are in 10 different companies. The largest majority are in my name though in BAe & Airbus. Not sure what I can do with the Airbus ones as I think they are on the Paris stock exchange although I think my dividend payments come from the Netherlands, its annoying as they send them by swift transfer which they charge me for.

If you open account with a broker and keep the shares set it up to get the dividends to auto reinvest and to buy new shares.
