Sorry for being thick (again

Thanks for any pointers

you need 2 cables to the drive , a data cable and a power cable , the power cable is (usually) black and flat , and is keyed so that it only goes one one way. it usually has red , black and yellow wires going to it
the data cable is usually a flat cable with black plugs but smaller ends
this is a data data cable http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/30CM-Right-Angle-Serial-Sata-to-Sata-PC-Motherboard-Cable-For-DVD-HDD-Hard-Drive-/400806462196?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item5d51ed42f4
you may have a spare sata power lead inside your computer , if not you can buy adaptors to convert from the old IDE type http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Molex-to-2-SATA-Hard-Drive-Dual-Power-Adaptor-Y-Splitter-Cable-4-pin-15-pin-/371052546021?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item56647487e50 -

yes , and I understood it as a genuine question , and tried to make it easier by posting you some pictures to help ,
keep us informed , and fire back if you have any problems .
PS , if the machine is newish/sata , then it will prob have a sata dvd drive , if you don't use this , use the leads on that to power your spare drive0 -
