Invalid Car Tax for 6 months, possible fraud?

I wonder how much money has been gained by the dvla/hmrc with the double payment?


I was speaking to a new car salesman the other week, he was saying with some of the tax bands being free for the first year then £x after that (D for example is £0 first year then £100 after that) when they pre reg a car they use the £0 tax, then when they sell the car a month later they cant send the tax with the car like they would have done previously. So the new buyer has to tax the 1 month old car at whatever rate it is.

It is a ridiculous method.
It'd be better if it were totally non refundable unless the car is scrapped or written off.

I've once it's taxed its taxed. Simple as.

If the car is sold as salvage it's still taxed until it expires.

If insurance write it off. Or it's scrapped, a refund should automatically go to that last registered keeper, otherwise it shouldbe the car that is taxed, not the person

This was exactly right, I had the DVLA investigate what happened. They just rang me this morning and told me that the original payment method was cancelled. So either a cancelled/bounced cheque, or a credit card chargeback. This happened after I became the registered keeper.

My suggestion to the DVLA that the registered keeper should be informed of such things when they happen was met with little response. Would it really have been so hard for the DVLA to send a letter to tell me I needed new tax?
