Discrimination at work

Before you go throwing the race card around, you need to have hard evidence that you have been discriminated against baded on ethnicity.
Unfortunately, taking the logistics of the application process aside, there may be dozens of reasons why you have been passed over for this course. You have already admitted that your job description doesn't require the course. If spare course places are available then numerous factors will come into play: competency, skill base, appraisal results, absentee rate, customer feedback, long term aspirations etc.
An attitude that suggests you believe you are being victimised in some way, simply because of race will win you no favours at all and not endear you to peers or management alike. Do not be surprised if you are passed over for promotion and career advancement.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
Point taken thanks, but as it stands that's how it looks to me.
One of the managers who got involved jumped to the conclusion a mistake had been made, before establishing the facts, which annoyed me.
I am in the process of raising another grievance and will let any subsequent investigation hopefully establish the reason. You've been given a lot of advice on this thread, which is great.
However, this bit of your post jumped out at me.
As yet you have absolutely no evidence. Yet you have reached a conclusion which suits your perception. That's exactly what you've accused your manager of doing. Do you not see the parallel? Why wouldn't they like me, I've only been working there about 2 months? I've had next to no interaction with this particular manager.
You have completely missed the point.
You are doing exactly the same thing as what you accuse your manager of doing. You accuse your manager of jumping to conclusions without evidence. You are doing exactly the same thing. You have no evidence about this, other than "it's coz I'm black, innit" to coin a phrase in common usage.
To follow your argument though, if you've had next to no interaction with this manager, then there is an equally valid explanation for what you perceive to be happening, which is not race-related. It is because for a whole range of other reasons you are not eligible for the course, or suitable, or a high enough priority, or out of probation, or ...
But of course that will not fit with your pre-determined assumption that it MUST be because they don't like your race.0 -

All very concerning when we realise the OP is a police officer0 -
1. I have not spoken to the person, as I do not know them very well. But I can assure you, I have followed the correct process to apply. Problem is partly due to not being supported and given correct information how to apply in the first place.
It's not just about whether you followed the correct process - it's about whether you did the same thing he did.
Where I work, it's near impossible to find out the "correct" process for anything. Asking senior management doesn't help much either. I've found the most effective way to find things out is to ask my boss' boss' secretary...
Your colleague might just plain know something you don't about how to get the training, and I can't see you losing anything by asking him.
Bearing in mind you've only had your job two months, if you make a nuisance of yourself (and if your employer isn't an idiot) they can just sack you. They can't sack you because of a protected characteristic (eg race), but they *can* sack you because they think you're a pain in the neck.0 -
If the person who got on the course isn't as good at the job as you are (which is, in essence, what you implied in an earlier post) that in itself may be the very reason they're being sent on the course and you aren't. Training budgets are limited, but if they have someone they may already be in the process of considering whether or not they're up to the job (being put on 'light duties' suggests there's some sort of issue somewhere, possibly) then they will, as a larger organisation, be keen to show that they have given the colleague every opportunity to succeed in the post, and that they have acted in a supportive way.
Personally, I'd keep my mouth shut and my head down - you have no idea at all what's been going on for your colleague, or what their personal circumstances are, but however it's been played out, your HR dept feels that they would benefit from doing the course. It's not a territory you want to be stamping about in, with size nine boots on, speculating, making demands or being overly pushy about. If there is some reason he/she needs to be on the course, then you're unlikely to be told what that reason is. You've made your point, asked how to get on this course - now focus on doing the job in hand and making them see you as a good potential investment of time, mentoring and resources, as someone they want to bring on. That can take a long time, but that's why you need to get down to it now. Unless you have very clear grounds to back up your r/d claim, it's going to take you no further forward and it's a waste of effort and goodwill.Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!0 -
Is it possible that local management simply don't take to you or see you as a poor fit with their plans?Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0

If you have only been there 2 months, you are hardly in a position to be applying for anything to be honest.
They have hardly got to know you and how you work yet.
Remember, they can 'let you go' at any time and don't have to give you a reason.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I don't think it's weird for your new manager in the new department to ask around about what you're like especially if they're considering whether to send you on costly training.
Sounds like you haven't worked out how to navigate a bureaucracy... I'd settle into your new department for a while and consider asking your colleague how they arranged the training.
You mentioned this is a large organisation. So the fact that 3 people on training in a large organisation are of one race means nothing.
If there's one way of making sure people won't like you, I'd say accusing them of being racist based on petty evidence is a good bet!Sealed Pot Challenge #239
