That could be the reason he pulled out. Not sure there is much you can do other than having your deposit back.

So did you ring him to ask, and if not why not?

Even IF they'd a buyer willing to pay more (which would be v unlikely for a reputable dealer to allow to happen) they could just have said they had found problems with the car.

Maybe they cancelled when they found out it was Cat D?

Sounds like you're best out of the deal TBH

I have only just opened the letter this evening, which cancelled the sale, so I have not spoken to him, not that there is much point now.

They did say there had been an insurance claim for the theft of radio and contents, but they conveniently failed to divulge that the vehicle is Cat D. Reputable Dealer ?

I'd say thats fairly decent of them to cancel the sale, rather than let you buy a written off car?

Cant say fairer than that really?

Interesting to see what they do with it...

I'm just annoyed that I've wasted a great deal of time and money (hired car), traveled a long distance, agreed a purchase, paid a deposit, only to find they withheld vital legal information and to add insult to injury, have breach the contract.

OP, you asked for advice without giving the full story, and so people have wasted their time in responding.

Are there any other hidden facts apart from the write-off?

Move on you haven't lost anything. You may well have hired the car anyway and not struck a deal so that cost is irrelevant.

The Cat D status has no bearing on the reason why the Dealer cancelled, so I didn't think it relevant. No one has wasted their time, I appreciate the advice, thank you

Your choice. You knew where the dealer was when you set out to view. If you'd decided it was the wrong car for you, you'd have still incurred that cost - voluntarily.
only to find they withheld vital legal information

Do you know they were previously aware of the CatD status, if that's why they cancelled?
and to add insult to injury, have breach the contract.

I'll bet there's cancellation grounds in the contract Ts & Cs.

He's not obliged to tell you it's Cat D, it's up to you to check or ask. All he has to do is to answer truthfully.
You could most likely sue him for Breach of Contract, since the deposit and receipt form a binding contract, but in the circumstances, he's done you a favour.
The time to check the car's history is before the deposit is paid, not after, when you cannot cancel without at least losing your deposit.
