Hi, I'm not sure if this is in the right place, perhaps someone could move it if it is please?
I want to visit my Dad in Luton, I'll be going with my daughter by car, from Sandy or Biggleswade & she'll be driving. We usually go through all the villages - Langford, Lower Stondon, Henlow, Shilington etc. which has always been fine but I slipped a disc in my back a few weeks ago and I won't be able to travel on those country roads with all their uneven surfaces & potholes as my back's still painful.
I've been trying to fathom out the best way of directing my daughter so that we travel on the motorway as much as possible but without adding on loads of time. I looked at the RAC site for directions but apart from the obvious mention of the A1 I can't tell which roads might be minor and therefore a problem for my back. Obviously dual carriageways will be fine too, as will A roads (I suppose). It's just country roads really.
Is anyone able to help please?

Use google maps and look at the detailed directions
Motorways are fine
A roads shouldnt be minor roads
B roads very easily can be minor roads
Unclassified will be minor roads
The problem is that it isnt just minor roads that are in a bad state of repair. The bypass around our little town has giant chunks missing from it in one part despite being a four lane dual carriageway A road. That said, anyone of reasonable driving skill and driving at an appropriate speed can avoid hitting them0 -
I would say sticking to A roads may be the best bet without knowing what state minor roads are in. So head north on the A1, then take the A421 to Elstow and the A5 into Luton. I suspect the worst part of your journey may be urban roads where your progress will be more stop/start and you'll have to deal with traffic calming measures such as speed humps.0

Up the A1 from Sandy/Biggleswade to the black cat roundabout(bit bumpy at present!)
Then A421 past Bedford to the A6.
Follow to Luton.0 -
Have a look at a paper road atlas. The different types of road are all clearly identifiable.
It'll depend where in Luton you want to go, really. If you're going to the south of Luton, then down to Letchworth then across on the A505 - all major, but does go through the centre of Hitchin, which can be slow, but nowhere near as bad as the horrific slog through Luton.0 -
Thanks all for your replies.
AdrianC, we are heading to near the Halfway House, my Dad lives just over the road from there, more or less, he's 10 minutes away from the Luton & Dunstable hospital, so on the border of Luton & Dunstable. We wouldn't need to go through Luton anyway.Money, money, money, must be funny, in the rich man's World!0 -
A421 past Bedford to the m1 junction 13, join it southbound. Come off at junction 11 just by the hospital. Decent road to the halfway house.0
