But no-one did try to steal the bike while the chain secured it, did they?

Seems like an excellent deterrent to me.

I don't know. I wasn't monitoring it 24/7 so I couldn't possibly say whether someone tried or not.

But no-one did steal it... qed.
• I think most security chains etc are to delay the theft. If they want it bad enough, they'll get it somehow.

Thank you for that insight.

If you're realistic, noone is going to invent a lock that's impossible to get into.

Not much is going to stand up to a hacksaw or two given enough time. I'd say 10 minutes is fair enough, if noone noticed and questioned it in 10 minutes then what are the chances in an hour?

Most important is to lock to solid objects (most bikes will go into a van with the help of 3 grown men).

Other than that you can't do much. Just hope that people find the sight of someone fiddling with a lock somewhat strange. And at night, fit a cover (deterrent from fiddling with a bike) and try and stick it out of sight, in a garden or similar.
Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”
Said Diogenes, “Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.”
