Tax a new car

Probably a question asked many times before, I have just purchased a new car and would like to tax it using the new system. I have been online and it asks me for the reminder details or V5 reference. Having just bought this car I do not have these so the system will not let me tax the car. Any help greatly appreciatted

    From the site
To apply online you'll need either:
    • the 16 digit reference number on your vehicle tax renewal letter (V11)
    • the 11 digit reference number on your log book (V5C)
    • the 12 digit reference number on your New Keeper Supplement
The part in bold will refer to your circumstance.
  • Thanks for the reply but I only have the green slip and on the site I can find no reference to inserting the 12 digit number on the green slip.

Is that the (V5C/2) if you've just bought the vehicle?

Apply for tax here, under the box where you would put your 16 digit number there is a 'link' for I don't have the V11 reminder, just the registration certificate or new keeper supplement .

    ^^ This ^^^
  • Thanks for the link I put the 12 digits in and on the next page I got this message "

Vehicle details could not be found

Sorry, we cannot find your vehicle details. This means you cannot proceed with your vehicle tax or SORN application. "

So looks like I will have to call them, does anyone know a free number, I tried the phone call to tax online but the two options are Reminder or V5 log book. I have also been round the post office but they say it must be done online.

Then it might not be the most recent V5C/2. Be thankful, because there'd be a chance that you'd think you were taxed, but the change of keeper may trigger a repayment to a previous keeper.

If you don't have the correct V5C/2, then you're going to have to wait for the V5C in your name to come through.

The PO _should_ be able to tax it from the V5C/2, though. Did they say why they couldn't?

  • Does your little green slip have a barcode on it?

The PO may not have been able to do it as not every Post Office can process car tax transactions. Might be worth checking the PO website to see if the one you went to can or not.

Just an update when I posted this item my log book came in the afternoon post of the 26th Feb so I entered the reference numbers on the log book and the sorn went through. Today I received a bill from the DVLA for £24.71 for an untaxed vechicle so I called the number on the letter a 0300 number.
I tried to explain to the guy the car was sorn on the 26th Feb I had a ref number and email confirming this, I was then put on hold to another department. I explained the situation again he noted the reference number and confirmed the car had been sorn on the 26th. I told him I tried to sorn it when I received the car on the 14th but the system would not let me with the green slip, he told me I should send a sorn form in with the log book, I told him the log book is sent in with the previous owner. So he told me to ignore the letter as the car is sorn and he would direct this matter to the relevant department. So now I wait another 4 weeks to see what is the outcome is, do I owe them £24.71 or not.

Most main dealers include a years VED in the sale, mine did but then again it was free for year 1 and only £30 a year after
