Had to send off Driving License for LUMA credit card

So I got an application for a Luma credit card. I'm going to use it to help boost my credit score. Spend £5 on it a month and have a direct debit to pay if off in full every month.

Strange thing was that I had to send off my driving license (or a passport) to prove my identity.

Never had to do this before. Is this a new thing for credit cards, or just the Luma card?

    A copy or the original?
Generally, it's not uncommon if they can't verify your ID via their sources.
You are registered on the electoral roll, aren't you?

It was the original they wanted (they'll send it back recorded delivery). I am indeed on the electoral roll.
