When you diet, you don't just lose fat, you lose muscle. The more muscle you lose the slower your metabolism becomes, meaning you need less calories to maintain your weight at your goal than if you had always been that weight.

Also exercise along with dieting - including weights training, which doesn't have to be trying to lift 20kg weights. Small stuff to start with. That is the only way the weight will stay off without constantly being on a calorie restrictive diet. Plus it means having a bit more muscle means you can eat a bit more and still stay the same weight (and not putting on any)

Edit: And if you do lift weights, make sure you eat a lot of lean protein to provide the fuel for your new muscles!

Its awful - I feel like I have let myself down.

I know how difficult it is to stop yourself feeling like that but try to see it as a temporary blip rather than a failure. Also remember that there's no need to be embarrassed when you see your friends, they love you for who you are, not what you weigh, and any weight loss you achieve is for you and not them.

I'm in the same position at the moment, my weight had been creeping up a bit so I started doing WW points (although I don't bother with meetings) again. I did really well for about 3 weeks and then seemed to lose all motivation and am now probably heavier than when I started.

Seeing as I booked a holiday this morning I'm hoping that knowing I've only got 3 months until I'm going to be sitting on a beach will be enough to give me the kick up the bum I need.
  • It is mind over matter.
Do you enjoy being thin more than you enjoy stuffing your face with food ?

Get this in to your mindset and the battle will fight itself.
I do Contracts, all day every day.
  • It has to be a lifestyle change. There's nothing wrong with having goals to aim for, but diets don't work, if they did, people wouldn't spend much of their life on and off them.

I put on weight easily, I always have. I also love food, its not a great combination. 20 months ago I was 15 stones 10. I was massive. After a few rough years, one the year from hell, I just got bigger and bigger and it took seeing me on a video to think, that's it, something has to change. Ive been a qualified fitness instructor for 7 years now, but I had an injury around that time and I went from being fit to being in the worst shape of my life in around 6 months.

I cut my portion sizes. I also cut down on alcohol. I stopped eating crap and I also count diet foods in that, such as low fat products and diet coke. I exercised hard. Im on my 4th bootcamp since last May. I do 3 bootcamp sessions a week, I lift weights and I also do the occasional boxing class. I also walk, a lot.

I finished my gym instructor qualification last April and I did my PT qualification last November and there is no way I could have done that without having a good level of fitness, we were fitness tested on the course and I amazed myself.

There are days where I slip up, I have the occasional treat. I still enjoy food. I just don't treat my body like the toxic waste dump that I did for a time.

Keep a food diary. Don't be jumping on and off scales every day, theres no need, we can put on weight from morning to night. Im not light on the scales, Im around 11 stones 8 at the moment, but I can get into a size 14 in jeans. Ive had to sell or get rid of all my size 16 clothes. Inch loss matters as much as weight loss and so does body fat percentage dropping.

I did one bootcamp last summer, followed the nutrition plan to the letter, didnt drink alcohol and lost no weight but I lost 14 inches and Ive kept them off.

The way I feel about myself now compared to how I felt about myself 20 months ago is like night and day.

I'm a big believer in that if someone is happy at a certain weight/size, that's fine, but I wasn't. I was absolutely miserable. Looking back, its not been that tough. The exercise has been hard but I love it.

I remember talking to someone at the gym and he was saying he couldnt drop any weight and I asked him what he ate, takeaways. I told him that I did Paleo and he said it sounded awful. My response was, I don't exactly look like I'm fading away do I?

Thanks all for your amazing advice. I havent looked into myfitness pal but will do. I go to the gym once a week but I know its no where near enough so I am going to go twice a week from now on (I am comfortable going once a week so just want to make it twice for now)

I am going to go back to writing a food diary too. I had a look on tumble and instagram at all the people who take pictures of their SW meals and have written a long list of new recipes I would like to try (just to shake it up and make it interesting again)

For the time being I think I will not set any targets and not weigh - I just want to feel a little healthier and not put an pressure on myself.
Thank you all again for your help x

  • I would recommend a podcast called fat 2 fit radio, they are all about sustainable weight loss and keeping it off sensibly, and are against crash diets. The problem when you lose weight quickly on a diet is you lose muscle and mess up your metabolism, weight gain then seems almost inevitable.

Good luck getting back on track x

The problem with seeing exercise as the solution to losing weight is that exercise generally leads to you eating more. That's not to say exercise isn't good in itself, as a means of keeping fit, but the average person doing a reasonable amount of exercise isn't burning off significantly more calories than they eat.

What I've learned is that calories are not all the same. Calories from sugar and carbohydrate are treated differently in the body to calories from fat. Sugar and carbohydrate cause insulin spikes which cause the body to store excess calories as fat. Eating calories in the form of fat and protein don't have same effect. It's not eating fat that makes you fat.

Call it Paleo, or low carb eating, it can have a huge effect, and as purpleshoes says, you lose inches, particularly from around the waist which is the most dangerous place to store fat on your body. I have lost about 6-7 inches off my waist since April and my newly purchased size 10 jeans feel loose.

I don't count calories, eat peculiar food, starve myself 2 days a week, spend hours exercising or any of the other hard to stick to stuff. I just don't eat significant amounts of carbs anymore and none of the low-fat low calorie food which the food industry want to sell you in the hope that it works, when it doesn't.

Try low carb, it could just change your life, it has mine.

I'm in a similar situation and funnily enough just started a new diet today. Late 2013 I managed to lose a stone and almost a dress size through low cal diet -1200/day but returned to the old ways of eating in 2014 and am now not far off from where I was to start with. Therefore last night I had a Last Supper and back on 1200 a day today onwards which also happens to be the first of the month. So no it's not just you! MyfitnessPal is very helpful yes.

Well first of all it happens almost everyone who loses weight.

Second of all, you know how to lose weight. You've done it before. I'd advise you to sit down and write out in detail why you want to lose weight. How you did it before. And how it felt when you were slimmer. Right now just commit to doing this and see does it change how you feel about getting back on the wagon again.

Thirdly and lastly, it's still a while to go to the summer. If you do nothing (and you're anything like me) odds are you'll be another stone heavier by then. If you do a little bit, you'll stay the same. If you do more, you'll be slimmer. You might not be *as* slim as you were last time you saw them, but you will feel a heck of a lot better for ot being any heavier, or indeed slimmer, even if it's only by a little.

I think you've posted here for us to give you a metaphorical kick up the you know what and tell you to get on with it. So consider yourself (gently) kicked!

I started back on 11th January and am 9lbs down. Am I as slim as I was? No. But do I feel better for it? Hell yes!

You might find this an interesting read by the way

I have had a fab first week using myfitnesspal. I have had one piece of cake yesterday as my treat but the rest of the time, have had a good variety of 'real' foods.

I have also cooked 2 new recipes this week, mushroom stroganoff and homemade breaded chicken breast. Although I have done it before, it hasn't been for a long time and didn't come out of a packet (well apart from the tray the chicken breast was in)!!

I am under my cal goal for the week. I have had a lot of veg and some fruit (mainly berries) in lots of different colours. I have also had lean meat, fish and a few potatos. No biscuits, sweets, crisps. And I feel much better in myself, generally less bloated and (ever so slightly) more energy.

I also downloaded some inspirational weight loss quotes to my phone for when I need a boost.

My only downfall is the mirror - I caught sight of myself today and I cried. I mean I know I am big but I think I was slightly in denial about just how big. I was sat down on my bed putting my socks on and the sight of my middle reduced me to tears. I suppose I am scared that I will never get away from that!

I feel as if my mindset is different this time though so will keep plodding on!
