Carpet or laminate in lounge

Moving to new house ;)

Confused on flooring. The existing carpet is very poor condition so must be removed.

But can't decide whether to go for laminate or carpet.

The lounge+diner size is 34 ft x 12 ft.

I understand laminate looks cleaner but worried if the room will be too cold (can't afford underfloor heating).

Trouble is, it is not possible to try both and select one that suits me (alas).

So, what is your personal experience with either?

Neither. Go for real wood and have a couple of large rugs.

  • Having put engineered wood down in my bedroom and hallway, that's what I will use when the time comes to replace the horrible carpet in my lounge.

Real or even engineered wood is too expensive compared to either carpet or laminate.

Having spent a small fortune on engineered wood in a previous property, then spending considerably less on laminate in our current one, I'd go for laminate

We put down Quick step Pacific Walnut laminate in our lounge, dining room, hallway & porch, and it looks lovely. The guy that laid the floor for us said that it went down well & so far (only a few weeks) it has settled nicely and feels very solid underfoot.

Once we've finished the renovations, we'll put down a large area rug to the lounge to "warm" it up a bit

ETA: we got our area rugs from http://www.modern-rugs.co.uk/?gclid=CKjPpPql_8MCFbPKtAodtnsAKg. Had them a couple of years & they've worn brilliantly

    Do you have pets?

For me carpet in a lounge is a no with pets, too much hair and dirt.

I went for engineered wood flooring. Yes it's expensive but like most things in life, you get what you pay for. I had cheap laminate down and I took it up after a year. I say cheap, it was still about £15/sq. m.

The engineered stuff I have down now came in at around £23/sq. m however it's of much better quality and just looks and feels like it has more class.

Both super easy to hoover and wash over. Nice big rug in the centre of the room too :)

Another vote for carpet or real/engineered wood with a carpet or rugs on top.

In my opinion, laminate is nasty.

I don't have pets and won't have in future.

I do have a toddler (potty trained) and often young kids come to house.

Same goes for children in my opinion, I would never again have carpet in living room after spillages of milk, juice, chocolate, etc and the clean up with carpet. Much easier with the wood we have now. If I were you laminate would be the choice.
