Note - having two lanes in each direction does not make a road a dual carriageway.
THanks for that.
Although I guess it depends where you stand to roll your ball!
There is a dual carriageway that I use a lot where I could easily roll a ball from one side to the other.
This is at the junctions of roads leading to and from the dual carrigaeway.
Can be a bit hairy driving at 70 mph when a tractor pulls out:eek:0 -
A few refresher driving lessons with a local instructor sounds like a good idea or try your local IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) group.0

Hi kittie,
Sorry to hear of your loss.
As others have suggested - a few 'refresher' lessons or investigate for an IAM group near you.
Also I would suggest not only the latest Highway Code, but the little book called 'Know Your Road Signs.
Good luck.0 -
Very sorry to learn of your loss Kittie, I'm sure you'll be fine in no time. Just lacking a little confidence at this very difficult time. Some great advice on this thread. Good luck and please post again if you have any further queries.0

they were good, helpful posts. Thank you, ok yes awareness is key and recognising the road side conditions. There is a good instructor in the village, ex police. I`ll see how I go in the next few days and go from there. Eyesight is fine, I have regular eye tests and wear glasses
I heard yesterday that 7 village people had been `caught` and had to go on awareness courses. That made me sit up and think
Sat nav is good and is not a distraction. I don`t look at the coloured screen, I just have a simple black and white arrow in front of me. I was never any good with directions so a voice telling me to turn left in 100 yards is nice, it helps me with my road concentration
I appreciate the comments, very valuable
I only count 6 village people who is the missing one?0 -
Never trust a satnav, Mine tried taking me up as pedestrian zone a few weeks back. I drove past and the stupid thing rerouted to take me around the black to the same spot.
I had to just pick another road until it saw sense and routed me away from it.
They do have their moments and none of them are 100% accurate. Mates one said turn left up a farm track when out destination was some 30 miles away and on the main road we were already on.
My old Garmin used to have a senile moment on the Motorway, outside lane doing 70 on the motorway and it would suddenly think i was on the roundabout ahead of me and tell me to take the 3rd exit.

Coming from the SW, if the satnav is set to 'shortest route', it will tell you to turn left just before the roundabout and bring you back on to the main road 100m further on. If you look on the map you can see why. Caught me out once.
Satnavs are not stupid, but work with the information they have and what we ask them to do. If the information is out of date or incorrect, or if we are not aware how they interpret our instructions, then they will occasionally seem defective. I have been sent the wrong way by a satnav a few times, but it was always obvious why when you had a think about it. Use with intelligence, as a tool and not a master. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
how do I become more aware of speed limits
Getting done for speeding tends to sharpen the mind; at least it did for me0 -
And at the same time having 2 single lanes separated by a central reservation makes it a dual carriage way so 70mph unless otherwise stated.
Well, yes. That was implicit in my post.
Clarity:
Central reservation = dual carriageway. It can have 1 or more lanes of traffic in either or both directions.
No central reservation = NOT a dual carriageway, irrespective of the number of lanes in either or both directions.0 -

Anybody would think it was the number of carriageways which defined whether it was a dual or single carriageway. You'd think they'd make it more obvious in the naming, wouldn't you?0
