My daughter (19) wants to rent a house next year with her boyfriend. She will be in the second year of her degree. Her boyfriend flits from job to job, getting bored easily and quitting. He has just found a new job again after spending 6 months doing temporary work. He intends to start his own business up when they move in together. He is also currently homeless but staying with friends in a spare room.
Am I right in thinking that they don't stand a chance if renting anywhere given this? They think that they can, and are talking about renting through gumtree which I'm assuming will be less references needed but possibly an sublet with less rights.
Please help, I think that's it's a very bad idea but she doesn't think so!

She's an adult, you can advise (and I agree with you) but you can't stop her doing whatever she wants to.0

I totally agree, I'm just after some facts about wether or not it's possible before it's too late for her to arrange a share with some fellow students for the year while he sorts himself out a bit more. He can always stay over (even though I'd rather he didn't!).Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards. Soreen Kierkegaard 1854.0

It depends where they are... if there is a housing shortage they might not be able to find anywhere, but if there is a shortage of housing then a landlord might accept them rather than have an empty property.
Your daughter should be aware that if she shares with a non-student her household will have to pay 75 per cent of the full Council Tax rate, whereas if she shares with students there will not be any Council Tax to pay.
Anyway, I suggest that you encourage them to visit a local Letting Agent to find out what the attitude to her boyfriend would be... if renting as a couple is not going to be an option then she still has time to arrange a house-share.0
