Signed of JSA but told to still go to jobcentre and do jobsearch???

Options
An acquataince of mine had been on JSA for a long while- over 2 years He has now got a job at 20 hours a week weekends (£7.25 per hour) which will last until end of March and possibly lead to other work He started this last |Saturday

He went and signed off on Tuesday just gone after working the weekend - but his job advisor has told him that he still need to go into the JC on |Friday and do his Jobsearch there

This didnt seem right to me so I queried this with him and he contacted the JC told him that as its a temporary job he still has to do this Surely this isnt right? He wont get any money as will be earning too much

Does anyone know anything about this?

You might like to have a look at this and see whether your friend fits into any of the examples.

From my understanding your friend can be asked to do his job search so that he can find more paid work/more hours (depending on how many hrs his job seekers agreement says)

From what I have read this is only waived if he is under contract in his present job and is required to give notice - ie. he could not start another job.

Not an expert in this area though.
  • wow i didn't know this existed i too thought once you are signed off you are classed as working and that you do not claim therefore you dont need to be looking for another job. I really hope this is not the case as that does not seem fair to me.

will look through in a bit- but surely as he isnt signing on nor claiming anything he isnt tied to a jobseekers agreement
  • I am single parent currently on JSA I think I am going to be offered a job which is 15 hours at 7.20p/h which is much more than jsa but as only 15 hours can I sign off and still claim working tax credit and hb

You need to be working 16 hrs a week to claim working tax credits. You can still keep your JSA claim open to receive your NI contributions but you would have to adhere to your job seekers agreement.

You can claim HB and CT reduction but you will need to inform them of your change of circumstances.

This is what will happen under Universal Credit as he is not fulfilling his Claimant Commitment conditionality of earning the equivalent of 35 hours @ National Minimum Wage. He would need to attend the Jobcentre, and any other sessions they deem fit, to prove he is actively seeking more work or a better paid job.

Eventually under UC, the Housing Benefit/Local Housing Allowance element of UC is sanctionable when conditionality is not met. The Jobcentre's are in a disorganised state at the moment with the introduction of Universal Credit, with UC conditionality increasingly imposed upon JSA and current UC claimaints.

It is feasible, dependent upon his conditionality, particularly if he is claiming Universal Credit, that his Housing Benefit could be sanctioned if he does not attend job searches on Fridays.

i dont think we have UC credit here yet and he is not claiming housing benefit ( living with relatives so dont think he can) at all Was Jobseekers he was claiming So dont see what they can sanction as he isnt being paid JSA and nor i presume getting NI credits as he isnt signing on
