I'm sure it says on any receipt I've had, that the item must be returned in a resellable condition.

Well that certainly would not apply if there was a manufacturing issue or if the product failed because of faulty assembly/materials.
However, in this case the OP should have taken notice of the cleaning instructions. I always wash my Adidas trainers and they turn out fine, but a mate put his Mizuno running shoes in the washing machine and the sole came away from the main body of the shoe.
I don't think that I ever washed my Nike Air Pegasus when I owned them - just as well by the sound of it.0 -
