I'm glad you pitched-in first phoebe, as I thought it might be just us who looked first!
Like you, we expected to move area and change to a very different kind of property (smallholding), so although the Internet was helpful, nothing could replace visiting in person, as there was so much to learn. This involved long journeys and weeks away from home in winter time, so it wasn't as if we weren't putting ourselves out too.
Our research showed that there were some significant down-sides to the area we'd chosen. I won't go into them, but without personal experience it would have been hard to judge. I was pretty cut-up about it, but we bought in a completely different place.
Long story short, I'd do the same again. Whether others allow you to view before marketing/being under offer is a separate matter, but we never had a problem or refusal.0
