Removal firms and storage - getting it out again!

We moved into a rented house almost a year ago, and used a firm to move us here and put a proportion of our stuff into storage. we've been paying about a hundred quid every month for this.

We're finally getting towards moving into our new house, and we've been recommended a bloke who'll move us for about £350 less than the other lot - but they're saying he can't go and collect our stuff from storage and that we have "a cheek" for suggesting we might use someone else.

I can't go and get my own stuff out, nor will they release it to this new chap - so basically they're holding my stuff to ransom! They could presumably have increased their rates by as much as thewy like and yet they say they can insist that we use them, or at the very least will charge us a "handling charge" for (they say) **2** of their men to go and be there whilst the other bloke takes it out of storage.

Can this be right??

Sounds dodgy to me. Read the contract you signed to see if there is any mention of a handling charge. Then kick up a bit of a stink - phone their head office, speak to whoever you can get higher up the food chain (manager, director, etc) make yourself a nuisance to them. Call trading standards and see if they have had any other complaints about the company.

Also, read the contract to see what you've agreed they will do. Often the contract includes three stages - remove; store; deliver to new address.

What have you asked them to do? (in the contract)
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
  • Thanks - the contract was for remove to store - they didn't quote to move us again, so can't see how we could have a contract for this move. The contract says "there will be a handling charge if you collect your own stuff" - which is £172.
