Is it your first year?
I would wait til u speak to the lecturers because for each of my modules there were a list of text books (at £30 - £60 each I might add) but in the first lecture for each module they would say which books they recommend buying
Many times its just one main book needed and the odd chapter out of others in which case a trip to the library is cheaper. I couldn't see the point of spending £40 on a book just for a reference in one chapter
Also there are notice boards up and many students who have 'gone up' a yaer sell their old books on cheapDebts:
Student Loan
Student Overdraft
Cerdit Cards

Try Academic Book Trade for selling and buying books - you'll get several offers for the same title at varying quality and can decide what's more important, a cheap book with someone else's notes and highlighting or a more pristine version for a bit more
WRT amazon: I usually check the marketplace offers for cheaper books, there can often big price differences be found (my sociology book sold for £25/27 on amazon, I got the book in immaculate condition for £13) just remember to add around £2.70 to the price you see because that's what you get charged for in postage when buying from one of the sellers there. And sadly, it's £2.70 for EACH book you order, even from the same seller.0 -
A lot of people at my uni sell on their old text books by advertising on notice boards.0
