If you could find out from your daughter what the particular model is then maybe we could help you both further?

    I assume she's running Windows 8 or 8.1?
Will do and in Oct 13 came with Windows 8 but she upgraded last year to. 8.1 to see if that helped.

Forgot she also it uses for Netflix but complains speakers too quiet.

    Found box. Asus x401a. Wx321h. Cpu B830 had 500GB 4g RAM

I appreciate all you are saying. She says she uses one drive and emails herself to uni and personal email except for her lecture recordings and she's going to back them up now. Photos on icloud.

As I said a techie friend cleaned it up at end of summer and I had a go on it and it was slower than my older machine (her old machine that she dropped and I had fixed). It's just sluggish and was wondering if it's underpowered for her needs - don't know spec as machine with her.

One of flatmates told her she isn't helping herself by having so many tabs open at once but she won't stop.

She runs malwarebytes and it finds nothing.
Sorry but you have the "dropped one" , how does that one run? If it is fine then ....

Having a look on Google the specs Asus list would drive me to think it's an Intel Celeron Dual Core at the price you paid for it in 2013.

Therefore if there's no bloatware and any form of virus/malware/spyware infection it probably wouldn't harm to upgrade the laptop's RAM. I'm guessing it'll be around 2GB. And it can be amended to 4GB.

Laptop speakers generally tend to be quieter/of poor performance (well the ones I've ever encountered anyway) so perhaps your daughter could consider a pair of portable speakers for when she's using Netflix?
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.

she had halls insurance with £10 excess. Repaired screen and new hard drive. They reinstalled operating system but no product key and original sticker worn. Rang MS who gave me free key. It suffers blue screen. Broad com driver message which I got rid off by downloading driver. I got drivers from Packard bell site for my machine for cam and mouse pad. Keep meaning to take for repair but then it works ok if u reboot.

Nope Poppy said 4GB , use of headphones would be better , I would still suggest clean up/restore , but without knowing what is running by default we are going to be in the dark..

She uses Chrome as she dislikes IE. Aside from installing office and malwarebytes don't think she has installed anything else

Speakers would be good for when she watches flim with friends. They have no TV as living poor!
