If you do this then do not be tempted to not declare the modifications as the quotes will be recorded by the Insurers. If you ever take insurance out with out declaring the modifcations they have a very high chance of catching you out and the previous quotes with the modifications are a slam dunk that you intentionally did not declare the mods.

Or, more sensibly, the OP should use details that are very similar to his own so that the quotes aren't linked to him.

Doesn't everyone do that at renewal time?

When I bought my car it came with non standard wheels and was significantly lowered. Once insurance companies were aware of the mods they no longer wanted to quote.

Car now back to standard so next year will be much easier.

    Thanks for the objective answers.

To the haters: Not that it is any of your business but my reason for altering the car is to have it look more like top of the range model and my own taste.

You'll probably need to go to a specialist insurer, the mainstream insurance companies won't touch a lowered car with a barge pole. Whether done correctly or not, they'll assume it was a bodge, springs cut down, original shocks still in place, tracking not adjusted. Basically they'll assume it's a dangerous car.

    Some certainly will.

Admiral Group require all modifications from standard fit to be declared including those made at point of manufacture. My car has what at the time was the optional "sports kit" on it which includes a lowered suspension and whilst there was an additional premium to pay for it they had no issues insuring it.

Annoyingly a few months later the sports kit became a standard fit thing and getting a quote for a dummy vehicle of the car where its lowered as standard then the premiums are what mine would have been if it hadnt been lowered but hey ho, was only a few pounds different and for the majority of insurer who only want post manufacture modifications to be declared its a non-issue.
