OK, thanks for that piece of wisdom.

Private sale = cheaper than trade, did you consider that?

    He's right though.

People who buy from private sellers know what private sellers are asking and will know what's cheap and what's not.

People who buy from dealers will pay more, and they won't generally buy a private seller's car just because it looks cheap.

There is a sweet-spot in the middle of people who will consider both, but they probably represent about 10-20% of all purchasers.

If you had that many people, who were all prepared to buy privately, on the phone about something as common as a Fabia, then it was indeed priced too cheap.

It was priced over three estimates I got from Parkers and two other sources ... I think it sold and attracted attention because it was well taken care of, FSH, low mileage, etc. At 10 years old, there isn't much in it ... could I have got an extra £50 or £100? Possibly. £200? Doubt it very much, without waiting it out and spending time with lots of viewings and time-wasters.

Also, it wasn't a "common" Fabia. Run a quick search on Gumtree Glasgow and see how many 2005 1.4 16v Fabias with < 50k miles there are ... (clue: It's a number less than 1).

Most of them within a 50-mile radius are diesel or 1.2 3-cyl petrol, with high mileage. This was a 1.4 16v 49k miles 2005. And I'm pretty sure it was the only one anything like it that was a private sale. As per my previous post, around here (Glasgow) most of the Gumtree sales are trade.

[Minor point, but I didn't say anyone wanted to buy it over the phone, or even that anyone phoned me - though I did get a small number of those Gumtree "make me an offer" emails that were offering £100-£400 less than I was asking. I had probably 12-15 responses within a day or two, all keen to come and look at it, and one person who wanted to come round before the buyer drove up from Ayr.]

Anyway, each to their own - next time I'm selling a car I'll ask all the experts on here how much I should sell it for so I don't get taken for a ride.

loskie, are you sure the Dacia Sandero Laureate is made in Romania? Top Gear think it is made in India>

I am not 100% sure but thought that was the case.

OK, here's another question. What is cargiant like? A lot of the ebay listings are for cargiant (because I sorted by distance).

From the cars I have seen on there, they don't seem to be overpriced and one positive is that I have some recourse to go back to them if something is terribly wrong. Or am I being too optimistic there?

Is it not one of those high cost credit places sell auction junk.

Motorpoint may be worth a look.

A 5 year old Ford Focus will easily last you another 5 years and save you a lot of money in depreciation.

Nothing wrong with my 13 year old Focus, which is actually surprisingly economical (40+mpg if driven sensibly). Less than £1k (including the cost of the car, but excluding insurance/fuel) for 15k miles and counting.

Only pitfall is the £285 cost to tax it this morning :(

Webuyanycar offered £500 for my car.

Sold privately to first viewer for £1500.

    That's a lot more than £50 extra.

When I looked they had plenty of choice but cars were not a great standard and lots of minor issues visible like dents or panel damage.

Not sure what that has to do with my post. I didn't say anything about getting an offer from WeBuyAnyCar.

I checked prices n Parkers and two other car valuing services (Can't recall which ATM) and added a couple of hundred. That is what I got (buyer paid the asking price).

I did just run a check on WeBuyAnyCar and their valuation/offer was £400 less than I sold it for.

I'm still not seeing any reason why anyone thinks I sold it too cheap, but no worries, it's sold, cash ion the bank, and that's what matters.
