Removable disk E

Hi . I transfer photos from my camera via Removable disk E . I click Removable disk E , db click DCIM, db, click 101MSDCF which brings up whats in my camera. I can then drag the tiles across into picture files.

Now Im getting a message that there isnt enough space on the removable disk and says I have 99.3MB free of 1.87GB. so it wont transfer any more photos . The red line that shows the capacity of disk E , is right at the full end.

I have only very basic knowledge of how to use computers , emails and the like , no technical understanding, so Id be really grateful if someone could explain ' very simply' please, what I should now do, whether its delete, buy, empty or whatever, to enable me to be able to continue to transfer my photos in the same way again ? Many thanks.

When you drag the image files from "disk E" to "picture files", are you copying them rather than moving them?

If you're copying them, then they'll still be on your camera ("disk E"), so eventually you'll run out of space.

Ideally, you'll want to regularly copy them from the camera to your computer (so you have plenty of space for new photos), and then keep regular backups of your computer in case that ever fails.

Did Esuhl answer you're question for you?

Hi . I transfer photos from my camera via Removable disk E .
When you say "via" do you mean that you are copying picture files from the camera to the removable disk E:, and then transferring then somewhere else more permanent with a higher capacity, like the hard drive of your computer?

Or do you mean that you are storing the picture files on this removable disk?

If there is no more room on the removable disk (do you mean a USB Flash Drive, sometimes called a Thumb Drive?) , you have two main choices:
    • delete some of the unwanted files from the removable disk, OR
    • buy a new removable disk with a much higher capacity, and use this instead
In the second option, you would obviously have to copy all the files from your original removable disk to the newer, higher capacity, one.

You should also bear in mind that USB Flash Drives (if that's what you have) can go wrong at unpredictable times. Ordinary hard drives, like on your computer, are usually more reliable. Best to have all the photos stored on two different types of media (at least!)...

Hopefully thanks . Ill just say what Im going to do before I do it , just in case Ive misunderstood!
Yes, I copy and drag tiles across to existing files .At the moment I only delete the last batch of pics on my camera by hand just before I want space to take new ones. Are you saying that as Ive copied the tiles to files, I should then be also deleting the original tiles on the 101 page?
(Mmm. thats starting to sound obvious now Ive actually 'thought ' about the 'copy transfer' way Ive been doing this !

Am I sorted then if I do that ?

yes once you have copied all pictures to the pictures folder on the computer, you can delete all the files in the 101 folder on removable disk E

Yep -- that's what it sounds like. If you're not 100% sure, though, make sure you double-check before deleting anything.

If the files are all given unique names, you can copy everything on your camera ("drive E") to "picture files". If any files already exist in "picture files" you'll be asked to overwrite them (i.e. you copied this photo previously... do you want to overwrite it with a copy of the same photo).

Of course, that assumes that the photos are uniquely named. My old Kodak camera started reusing the same filenames after about 10,000 photos... So look out for that!
  • Wonderful, thank you all very much - Ill trot off and delete some 101 tiles . I should have thought of that myself , --thats the trouble with not having any understanding of what various internal bits of pc's 'do' and are 'for' etc , and just doing to the letter, what youve been told to do to achieve a result. Still, every situation adds a bit to my learning (which some of us silver surfers find slower these days!!)
