Help! Taskbar has gone all funny!!

Think my pesky children have been messing about with the pc and something odd has happened to the taskbar!! Every time I opened a new application I get double the icons along the taskbar. I thought I was going mad and had opened things twice, but when I closed one down, it closed both. I logged off and logged on again, only this time instead of there being two, when I minimise them, they disappear completely and I can't see them to click on. I usually have the taskbar unlocked so I pulled it up to see if they were somehow underneath, but nothing. Whats happening???

theres an options to lock items on the taskbar somewhere...have you right clicked on it and checked the boxes corresponding are ticked accordingly?Fr.
