Photos on External HD. problem

Hi all

I decided to change the hard drive in my Vaio laptop to an SSD drive.

The existing drive had plenty of spare capacity and worked Ok apart from being a little slow, so I bought an external enclosure for it and intended to use it as a backup.

The new SSD was fitted into the laptop and works well.

The only problem I have is with photos on the old HD. When I view them as thumbnails, all the icons are hazy and partially greyed out. I can just about make out the images. When I click to open the files they are fine and the images are clear as before.

I transferred some images back to the SSD in the Vaio but they too are hazy.

So, What have I done , or omitted to do, to enable me to store my images properly and able to be seen as thumbnails

I'm sure it's an obvious basic error and any help will be gratefully accepted

Thanks in advance
