Cold feet?

Is it normal to get a little bit of cold feet before exchanging?! I'm a FTB and not sure whether it's just nerves or if it's the wrong house :/
Has anyone else felt nervous with second thoughts before exchanging?

Of course buying a home can leave you with mixed emotions but it's not too late to pull out.

Let's face it for the majority of FTB's in the current market your first home will not be everything of your dreams, but if you are having serious doubts that this is either the place or the right investment for you then now is your last chance to pull out.
  • Nope but had second thoughts afterwards. Neighbours were noisy and it was severely affecting me. But that isn't a problem any more as the horrid neighbours have left.

Why do you feel it may be the wrong house? Biggest purchase of your life so you have to feel 100%, but at the same time with it being the biggest purchase of your life it's natural to feel nervous. Need to balance.
  • Yeah we knew we'd have to compromise on something, though it's then difficult to decide if it's a compromise or a deal breaker. The house is lovely though doesn't have parking with it, so we'd have to park up the road.
When put like that it sounds really simple, though sometimes it feels like it's a big deal.

Hmmm buying your first house is usually exciting and you can't wait!

I'd be wary if I were you, have a good think if it's the right house for you.

We had cold feet and when I moved in I hated it but it didn't last long I think it was the adjustment to the massive step I'd taken. 5 yearslater and though it's not our dream home and we plan to move in a few years we do love it because it's ours.

No, because there were so few houses I could afford that it was the best I could hope for. It was never going to be my dream house, because unless I win the lottery, I won't ever be able to afford my dream house. But I've been perfectly happy here because I accepted all along that it was some fairly large compromises or just not buy anything at all.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • As long as you have legs, and can walk, parking a few meters up the road shouldn't be too bad. Due to parking restrictions here, there's no way to park outside the house, have to park higher up on the other side of the street. Its not a huge problem.

We lived in a flat with no parking and it was such a pain! I hated not knowing if I was going to be able to park when I got home, especially when I'd been food shopping. A drive was number 1 on my list when we moved.

I think it's normal to get some nerves before you move in though, I did worry a bit because our house needs some work done to it. I still check rightmove to see what's on the market, but luckily I haven't seen anything I like as much as ours.
  • I know people who have had to make much worse compromises. But it's a very individual thing as to how much it affects you.

The thing to be just of aware of as cold feet is purchase regret. Even people who are super-enthusiastic about getting into their new house can end up a bit depressed once they have discovered the leaking pipe, noisy neighbour or awkward kitchen layout.
