I'm inclined to agree with dickydonkin that a lot of the responses are somewhat harsh. A disembarking passenger is pretty reliant on what the cabin crew tell them about external conditions, and certainly on my last flight we were warned of slippery conditions on the steps before we were allowed to leave.

So is the claim from the airline for not telling them the ground was wet and may be slippy or from the airport for allowing passengers to disembark onto a wet ramp?

Fair point Caz but I suspect that it would be the owner of the equipment who would be responsible for ensuring the equipment is maintained and safe. I would imagine that the ramps are the responsibility of the airport or possibly a ground handling company.

The crew on an incoming flight may not be aware of the condition of a ramp so the onus should really be with those responsible for the equipment to ensure it is safe.

An accident investigation would determine what was the cause of the accident (obviously the immediate cause was due to a wet floor), however, underlying causes such as poor maintenance, unsuitable floor surface, leaking roof over the walkway or poor housekeeping may have been contributing factors.

Without seeing the location and the equipment it is difficult to fully ascertain the full picture, but it is just too easy to say that the OP should have taken more care because she slipped on a wet floor.

Unfortunately it doesn't work like that - check out the prosecution pages on the HSE website to compound that assertion.
  • IMHO disembarking 400 times might lead to opinion that one should be more expectant of ill conditions than those who have only done it a few times.

Compensation culture is all too rife.

Really? I'm pretty reliant on looking out of windows, using my eyes and other senses to understand what the conditions are like when coming off a plane (and I've come off nowhere near 400 so surely the OP would have learned a thing or two in their time?).

There's no cash in taking responsibility for yourself. It sounds like the OP compounded the situation by carrying another person - although I guess the cabin crew didn't advise them not to carry children that is probably their fault too :D

Surely if its raining then the likelihood that somewhere you walk will be wet and slippery is a forgone conclusion.

Why would cabin staff, who have not yet stepped outside themselves, be responsible for telling passengers to take care?.

Personal responsibility has to come into play otherwise you would have a situation whereby everyone had to wait for it to stop raining and all surfaces dried off before passengers disembark. Then everyone would be going on about health and safety gone mad.

Thanks dickydonkin for your comment. I absolutely share your view. To give more context, I fell whilst I was trying to hold my 7 old daughter who was scared of falling. Fortunately the passenger who was behind me held her so that she did not fall with me. And yes the lighting was really poor.
I find the tone of certain people extremely patronizing and unhelpful. You would change your view if it happened to you.

Lucky for your daughter the passenger behind you was experienced at walking at night and in the rain.

And there you have it in a nutshell:T [/ENDTHREAD]
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

And that proves what exactly? That elfandsafety has gone mad and the pen pushers have taken over the asylum?
Crikey, HSE, those initials make me shiver. ;)

..... I slipped from the ramp which was was very wet (it was raining and it was dark). Flight attendants did not warn passengers that the ramp may be slippery.
    ........

For goodness' sake get a grip! If the above statements are really true then it sounds as if you could be Sectioned for mental incapacity.

I'm really looking forward to future flights. Plane parks, everyone leaps out their seats grabs their bags and are ready to get off.

Meanwhile the airport management are making an assessment as to the wetness of the ramp and if its safe for passengers to disembark. The ground handling team leader is also making an assessment of the steps for the same reasons. Both parties report their findings to the cabin manager and all three are now engaging into the safeness of actually letting anyone leave the aircraft.

The cabin manager decides they best assess the situation personally, so finds their coat and steps off the aircraft. Nobody actually wants to make a decision at this point for fear of retribution, so the cabin manager refers to the captain. The captain then decides he (or she) best make his (or her) own assessment of the situation, so puts down the post flight paperwork and starts rummaging around for their coat. 15 minutes have passed and nobody is anywhere nearer to leaving the aircraft than they were when it arrived.

Meanwhile passengers standing in the aisles clinging to their oversized carry ons are getting increasingly agitated and muttering how awful this airline is and how ridiculous it is they can't disembark because its raining in the UK in February.

    The world is going mad.
