Note: I'm posting this more as a rant than a plea for help, although my sanity could do with some assistance!

So we've now got our old BT phone number ported to our shiny new Virgin Media phone socket and all that was left to do was for me to remove our telephone extension to the next room (hard wired into the BT faceplate) and hard wire it into the Virgin faceplate. Our master socket is identical to BT's the Virgin installer had said as he left. Is it flaming 'eck!

You only need to connect two wires ... blue/white stripes to connection 2 ... white/blue stripes to connection 5. But when I take the faceplate off the Virgin master socket, it has got a choice of 4 connection points with ... wait for it ... numbering alongside 1,2,3,4,5,6 and of course none of the numbers actually aligned with any of the 4 connectors. !!!!!!!!!! How can you conceivably have 4 terminals with 6 numbers!

Well I took a gamble, ignored the two inner connectors and just used the two at either extremity of the block ... and it works, Phew. Is this some dastardly ploy by Virgin to discourage DIY and call an expensive engineer in I wonder?

With the inducement of a strong cuppa and the magic phrase ''chocolate hobnobs', the VM guy would probably have switched the extension wiring for you...

Once you've got the hardware side of this sorted, many of virgin's phone packages are pricy. If you've got one their media deals (broadband and cable as well) I'd consider their £5 per month mobile add-on SIM deals or your phone bills might surprise you.

Nice, always good to throw some xenophobia into your posts.
