I use a Chromecast on my (non-smart) living room TV. With Plex media server on my PC, and the Plex app on my phone, I can stream media (movies, photos, music) from my PC to my TV over wifi).

(It also means I can stream Netflix, BT Sports, etc. to my TV using my phone).

You'd need to pay to buy something that enables wifi on the TV. A Chromecast is under £30 and will certainly work. You could look at a Roku as an alternative.

Basically - you need a wifi device connected to the TV.
  • Am I correct in saying that a Chomecast only sends certain media to your TV? e.g. netflix, youtube etc. or is it possible to actually display your PC desktop and basically use another TV as a wireless monitor? (if you have a long enough keyboard cable :) )

What requires a USB connection? Chromecast plugs into an HDMI socket - USB is only used for power, and the CC comes with a mains adaptor if powered by USB is not an option.

You can cast your mobile screen to the TV (beta I believe but works ok). From a computer you can cast Chrome (a single tab at a time).
