I want to do something extra special for my mum this Mother's Day because it's going to be the first one she has without her mum. Trouble is I can't think what to do! It's difficult too because I live far away from her and won't be able to get there for a visit.

I can IOU an activity for when I do see her, but I wanted something for the actual day as well, I want to try to help her with a day I know could be pretty tough for her. I will of course send card/gift and call as usual.

How about a nice framed pic of her mum? Or a family picture including you all? Depending what access you have to pics a photo album with a few?

Or if you knew her favourite flower send a bunch of those? I remember my nans fav were Lillies and now my mum likes getting bunches with a lilly mix as it also reminds her of her mum.

Thanks ALou19. Mum's got all the photos! But I usually send flowers so as I know what my nan's favourite flower was I think I'll look for a nice bunch that includes those. And an extra-long good natter on the phone, to keep her from dwelling on it too much.

For my own mother, who sadly passed 14 years ago, I made myself a photo memory candle. It was a bit like this:

(this picture from Martha Stewart website)

I made mine from a charity shop glass candle holder and printed pictures of my mother on to thin photo paper, with some writing added to the photos. For safety I used battery operated candles. I love it and bring it out each mother's day as my way of thinking about her. You could also make a simple one using black card. I am fortunate enough to have two of my own boys that make my mother's day special too.
