Transfer of Car

I have my car insured with 3 named drivers including eldest daughter.

I want to give the car to my eldest daughter as a birthday present as a surprise. She is at university living away from home during term time.

Is it possible to arrange DVLA transfer and change of insurance in advance without the knowledge of my daughter or will she need to be aware and have to sign documentation herself.?

From my limited research it seems to be not to be possible.

Has anyone found a way to handle this?

Thanks.

    Come on man!
It's enough of a surprise to just do the necessary when she returns, it's obvious why some things cannot be done without consent.

I don't think it detracts from the "surprise" if you have to do it afterwards.

Why don't you just buy her a "really nice" (i.e., naff) key ring ... and then when she doesn't get why .... act like you forgot something, take it out the room and bring it in with a brand new car key (of course that might be expensive if it's one of those electric remote keys) ...

... or something equally daft. Like a photo key ring with a photo of the car in it ...

... or some car accessory like an air freshener ... and when she says "but I don't have a car" or "what do I do with this?" ...

You can arrange the transfer the same day you give her the key ring/key.

Changing ownership on the V5C will probably mean the tax will expire and be refunded to the current keeper, you/she will have to retax it again.

No, it won't expire, it will be refunded to the previous owner.

Of course it will have to be taxed under her name under the new rules, she is the new owner.

The steps for a private sale/transfer are:

Car is transferred to new owner using V5C. The new owner signs this, so must be present.

By the letter of the law, once this has been done (the V5C is filled in), the car can't be driven anywhere by anyone until it is insured and taxed in the new owner's name. (Even Dad can't drive it at that point because his comprehensive insurance only covers other cars that are insured in the owner's name). This (tax and insurance in daughter's name) can be done at the same time as the above, by phone or online.
