Barclaycard Platinum - Offered different card

I applied online for a Barclaycard Platinum Purchase (14 months 0% purchase, 23 months 0% balance transfer), however it was referred. I received a letter stating they could only offer me the following deal - a Platinum card, with 7months 0% interest on purchases, 11months 0% balance transfer, and 29.8% APR, which is fare as my credit rating has quite a few searches on within the last few months due to moving banks etc.

I just want to know, if I accept this offer, can I renegotiate a lower APR/offer with Barclaycard in 7-11 months times, or will I be stuck on the 29.8% APR and have to close the card/reapply for a new one to get a lower APR?

Thanks!

  • My guess is that you will have to move again when your promotional period ends.
If you pay the card off in full every month (outside of any promotion) then it should not matter what the APR is?

I called them prior to my offer ending and they lowered my APR.

  • BarclayCard are known for reducing APR's upon a threat of leaving.
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.
  • I had an email from them only the other day offering to review my APR within the next couple of months and I only got a card with them in January.

If you don't ask you don't get and I expect you will be able to negotiate it down if you keep your account in good order in the meantime.

    Good luck.

I thought I'd update this - Have had my Barclaycard for 3 months, phoned today to ask for an increase in credit limit, and reduction in APR (even though I'm on a 0% deal until September).

Credit limit increased from £1000 to £2000
APR lowered from 29.9% to 23.9%

The CS rep advised calling back before my deal ends in September, and they'd likely offer another 0% deal, or reduce my APR by 6% again.

Overall, Barclaycard have been great so far. :)
