Hi, does anyone know if my daughter will be able to apply for ESA? She has CFS and Clinical Depression, and has had to drop out of college due to these conditions. I'm at a loss to know where to turn. TIA.

These are both hard illnesses on their own so both together must be very hard for her.

To initially get ESA all she needs is a fit-note from her GP. After approx 13 she will be assessed. She will be only able to get income based as she won't have NI contributions.

My son claims ESA - he has ME.

It's not the diagnosis that matters but how it affects you.

Have you seen the ME Association site - you can get leaflets that help when filling in the forms - http://www.meassociation.org.uk/shop/

Just to add that if she hasn't already, she should consider applying for Personal Independence Payment also (both can be paid at the same time) if she meets the criteria.

    hi joeblack066

i feel for the current situation your daughter is in i know how debilitating CFS and Clinical Depression can be and the impact it can have on the person daily life its a struggle suffering and dealing daily with once condition let alone two.

just ignore some of the silly comments in your thread as others have said let them walk a day in her shoes and they would soon realise just how difficult is really is to live with these conditions.

as others have said i think you should defiantly make a claim for ESA and also PIP.

PIP is taking longer than usual at the moment and also ESA is not far behind that either i know people who get both benefits for the same conditions your daughter has but it all depends on how her conditions effect her daily.

the forms can be a little long winded at times but always make sure you send in as much supporting evidence as you can for both benefits medial reports. medication. diagnosis even letter of support from yourself describing how the conditions effect her daily

good luck with everything and if you need any further help or advice just let us know there is a lot of good people on here with a vast amount of knowledge for you to use if needed

Thankyou everyone. I sometimes feel very alone in trying to support her, and your lovely replies have really helped.

Unfortunately, you're far from alone. There are a lot of young people struggling with ME.

Has she tried the AYME forum for support? It can be a huge relief to be in contact with others in the same situation - they know what you're going through without having to try to explain.
