Opinion on hairdresser charges

They're definitely trying it on OP. I got really fed up with hairdressers trimming less than an inch off my hair and charging me £40-£50 for the privilege, and expecting a tip on top of that, that I bought a pair of hairdressing scissors off ebay, watched a few tutorials on youtube and now trim my own (long, layered) hair. It doesn't look any different to when the hairdresser did it, and the best part is, I already know where I'm going on holiday and so don't feel a need to make small talk with myself. It was very nerve-wracking at first and I've messed it up a couple of times, but have always managed to fix it. I've also coloured my own hair for years, including drastic changes.

Obviously, if I wanted a restyle, I'd go to a salon, but a quick trim of my layers, that, I can do myself. Its very MSE :money:

I went to a salon 2 years ago as I was visiting the town for a conference. I only wanted a trim, as I had very long hair that I was saving for a charity haircut later in the year. I went in and asked how much it would be for a trim. One of the stylist overheard, didn't even turn around to look at me, and said "Dunno, how long's your hair?". So I said "down to my bottom". He still didn't turn around, and said "that'll be more then, £40". Needless to say, I said my thanks and went elsewhere. I have no idea how that particular place stays in business with that kind of customer service!

PS: I did get my hair cut for charity and collected £375 for them. :)

Sorry to disappoint you luv, but your OTT priced haircuts are done by hairdressers with EXACTLY the same qualifications and skills as the ones who charge a THIRD of what you pay!

You are very naive if you believe any different. You are being royally ripped off.

    End of.

I think it is you who is naive (plus you are coming across as quite obnoxious in your posts) not all hairdressers have the same qualifications and they will certainly have different skill sets the same as in any other professional. The old saying 'you get what you pay for' springs to mind.

I do agree. You have your basic level 2/3 qualifications, then you can do extra courses on top for more skills, making you a senior stylist. From talking to different salons, the more expensive ones are far more demanding on entry qualifications.

I went to a salon in a local college, and was unlucky to get someone who didn't work part time in a salon. She had almost finished her course but didn't have a clue how to do even basic styling or cuts (I had a bob, so not an unusual style). I was telling her what to do! Thank god for the supervising tutor. There were other people there who were far more able.., and they all worked in salons while attending college.

Oh and BTW their course was called full time, but was actually two days a week. I wonder how anyone trains to be a stylist now. I suppose on the job training is very important.

I knew with the salon I went to above, I wasn't going to get a technically perfect cut and style, but was ok with that, it wasn't a difficult cut.

So let me get this straight, people are prepared to pay £35 to £47 for a HAIRCUT?! Just basically, a TRIM (or supposed restyle?) I pay my hairdresser (who has a mobile service) £7.50, and even the hairdresser in town charges only £12. DH pays £5 at the barbers for his.

No wonder some hairdressers charge such massively over-inflated ridiculous prices, especially the swanky salons if people are bonkers enough to pay it!

Some people will come along and say 'it's an art' 'it's a craft' or some such lines... And maybe it is, but if my hairdresser can charge £7.50, and the salon in town charges £12, then how does anyone justify charging almost £50 for the same service?

I think they prey on the pretentious, and people who have more money than sense.

My friend has done her hair lightening at home for 12 years, with a spray in lightener (sun in I think,) because she got sick of paying over-inflated prices for her highlights. (It went up from £23 in 1997 to £47 in 2003.) Well it really bugs her neighbour who is a hairdresser. She keeps saying 'your hair is not in very good condition you know, it's dry...You should have it done professionally.' It's no worse than when she had it done at the hairdressers; the neighbour is just irked that she is not getting £70 every 6 weeks from her!

You keep saying 'over-inflated' but that's only your opinion.

I think your post shows the damage MSE has done to the service industry. But hey, as long as you've helped make Martin a multi-millionaire 87 times over.;)

Op, how much was the cut before you used the voucher? I think if I'm right your husband got you this as a treat? So it isn't somewhere you would usually go?

My hubby used to pay for me to go once a year to the top hairdressers in the area, omg I loved it. My hair would be amazing for at least a month afterwards, but it was a treat - which has stopped now :(

I think the time to complain is when you are there, not come home. I just feel it's a bit late now.

If the cut I'd better etc, it has shown you where you usually go, and pay considerably less, isn't very good. Maybe look around for another hairdresser, who had the skills you now know about but at a more lower cost?
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

I go to the barbers in the next village, it's run by a couple of Turkish brothers.

I get my hair cut, my goatee trimmed to perfection, eyebrows trimmed and the best wet shave I've ever had with an open razor. When they wrap your face in a wet towel that's so hot, it almost, but not quite scalds, it's a wonderfully relaxing feeling.

All this and a cup of the most wonderful Turkish coffee for £7.50.
One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.

And you have, stupidly, missed one major difference between your bargain mobile hairdresser and the ones who have "ripped off" their customers. It's called a salon. These attract significant costs to the owner - rent, business rates, electricity, water, insurance ......

Actually, that's complete rubbish. I'm a house model for a chain of high end salons and they're very particular about who they employ. They are always
training their staff on the newest techniques and trends. The team who do my hair is amazing, they've had all kinds of awards but they're always going up and down the country learning new techniques (for example, less damaging bleaching methods - very important when you're a bleach blonde like myself!) and teaching their staff.

On the flip side, before I became a model, the hairdressers who used to do my hair were dirt cheap but I always came out looking exactly the same, even if I fancied a change. I have my hair bleached and then toned to white; the team who do my hair now always pay very close attention to the condition of my hair and they always get a lovely clean tone to it, my old salon would often fry my hair and it was never a nice all over colour, it was often yellow in parts. My sister went back there and none of the stylists had ever done any other training since their initial college qualifications, some of them over twenty years ago.

The hairdressing industry is largely unregulated so anyone can pick up a pair of scissors and call themselves a hairdresser. I can't speak for all salons but the expensive, fancy one I model for is so careful about how they cut and colour hair, their reputation is on the line and so they're always paying for their staff to go on new or refresher courses. But cheaper salons can do pretty much anything to your hair and their prices are so low, people go back regardless of the end result.

Yes, top end salons are expensive and sometimes over priced but I'd hasten a bet that they are highly trained compared to say, a mobile hairdresser who charges £7 for a cut and blow dry.

And as for your friend who uses sun in on her hair, seems she doesn't have a lot of sense either. It contains peroxide, a low amount yes but leave it on your hair too long and expose it heat (for example, the sun) and you're risking major damage. There's a reason why a salon rinses bleach off... You only have to spend a few seconds researching why it's so awful for your hair. I'd much rather pay the costs for a well trained hairdresser to do it as opposed to fry my hair with a horrible product and have it break off and snap.
