second the comment about taxis!
its nice to go by water taxi to Sorrento from the port of Naples, you get a nice view on the way round.

Hi there have finally booked for early May and can't wait after finding flights for under £100. Would like a hotel, b and b or apartment near the centre but with seaview if possible. Can anyone recommend anywhere from personal experience - up to about £100 per night for double.
Would appreciate any other moneysaving tips but also how to make the most of our limited time there. Thinking of catching bus on way there from Naples airport but taxi on way back as our flight is 12.20 lunchtime. Would love to catch a bus to see the Amalfi coastline - which of the towns would you choose if only one and is the boat trip to or from very "sea-swelly" as I'm not very good on those sort of trips.
Any restaurant recommendations would be much appreciated. thanks
I enjoyed a public service bus ride along the Amalfi coast to Positano then we came back by boat.
I'd recommend going over to Capri but go up and wander in the high town as well as the more touristy bits.
Take the train to Pompeii, that was fascinating.
I also particularly liked the Marina Grande (smaller of the marinas ironically). It's quite rustic but has a lovely fish restaurant and pretty little church.0 -
thanks for all your continuing tips and suggestions - they are much appreciated. I have now booked the Settimo Cielo which is near the Bristol hotel on Via Capo and am pleased with my choice.
I was wondering if anyone know if there were any restaurants nearby - we will be arriving Friday lunchtime tired after an early flight and hungry and don't want to do our usual trailing round to find somewhere to eat.
Also any general restaurant recommendations would be appreciated - more rustic than fine dining is what we like0 -
Day trip over to Capri - There's a small bus which goes between the top and bottom of the harbour. It used to be 1 euro but don't know what it is now. Fastcat in morning and last one back at night. It's good to wander around the Harbour area but use the funicular to get up to the top where all the shops are.. Easy to walk back down. Bus from Capri harbour to Anacapri (don't even think about walking. It's not far but you'll see why!). Chairlift to top of monastary. Visit the Blue Grotto, small boat from the harbour to entrance where you transfer to a smaller boat which actually enters the Grotto (you need to duck down). You can also hire a small motorboat and sail yourself around the island. Fun moving across the harbour entrance where all the large boats come in through.
Trains are cheap in Italy. Get the train a couple of stops along from Sorrento - cable car to top and there's a dining area/cafe there. You canb get an organised trip from the booth outside the station but you can do it yourself if you don't want the whole package.
Bus along to Positano -
Train along to Pompeii and Herculaneum. Stop at Pompeii is adjacent to entrance. Herculaneum you'll have a short walk down the hill
In Sorrento you won't be short of rustic places to eat. Wander through the streets and see what you fancy.
Gelato - yum yum yum:D
Enjoy your trip and explore0 -
We went to amalfi on a bus on a Saturday . Three hours later we arrived. Should have taken just over an hour. Nightmare. Good views but thousands of cars and buses. Amalfi is nice looking up but looking out to see its a car park and bus terminal. People were swimming around a harbour. Wanted to see it but won't be in a hurry to go back. Positano nice. General thoughts are that the whole area is too commercialised. Never been to an area so over populated with people, cars buses and bikes. Must admit the views are stunning just ignore all the bad bits..0

Ravello is amazing, I think if you go to that part of Italy, Ravello is something that you will enjoy all 3 days even if not seeing anything else but the view.
Pretty basic, but with stunning views is the Hotel Graal.
On holiday-time.co.uk it has a great price, about £85 per night0 -

What time of year was that? We went in early June - there were plenty of people around but it didn't feel overwhelming. Traffic on the Amalfi coast road wasn't bad. I didn't do much driving on it though - left the car at the place we rented and took the buses.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -
I'm just researching this at the moment on Tripadvisor and like the look of this place...La cantinaccia del popolo. It's gets some pretty great reviews. Also any general restaurant recommendations would be appreciated - more rustic than fine dining is what we like
The only restaurants I can personally vouch for are a bit higher end than La cantinaccia. They are Fauno Bar, La Fenice, Minervetta (a few yards from your hotel and quite expensive...but the views!!!! ) and finally, my favourite would be L'Antica Trattoria. Just rest assured...you won't go hungry

Thanks Blue264 for all your help. I also spotted a restaurant which was called something like Verdemare which is near our hotel which I thought might be worth a try for convenience. Will look at your suggestions and thanks again0

I've already earmarked that first place you mentioned - just our sort of place and will definitely try and seek it out0
