Different providers for line rental & broadband ok?

I have a broadband contract with BT for another few months but annual line rental with BT ends shortly.

I was thinking of changing the line rental to the Post Office but in "live chat" with BT they said I can't do this.

Anyone know if this is correct? I can't find the info on the BT website.

Thanks

I think you'll find that all companies providing ADSL broadband require that you also rent the line from them.
You can get broadband only on cable from Virgin Media (if they serve your street), but it costs you almost as much as including the phone with them.

Seems a very odd requirement as a lot of people will already have a landline and just want ADSL without having to faff about switching landline providers. My isp offers line rental as an "option" at £10 per month but certainly not compulsory!
  • Many providers do offer ADSL-only over a different provider's landline, but Bt will push heavily for you to take their landline as part of a bundle.

I don't know if they can enforce providing BT broadband on a non-BT-retail line.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • Unlike some other suppliers i dont think they offer just broadband only plus Post Office Homephone is no longer a BT compatible service.

Also if they did allow you to stay .if you purchased the phone and broadband from BT as a package and you move your telephone line, and calling plan to another communications provider but carry on taking any other services in your package with BT,they we'll end your package contract and you'll have to take each remaining service on a new standalone contract with a new minimum period.

If the Post Office now use(and sell under their own name) Talk Talk's service, they are re-selling TT LLU , so it's both the PSTN and broadband together, they won't allow you to have broadband from someone else, the same as TT new customers , you could just take the phone, but if you ever decided to add broadband it would have to be from them or move your line rental to someone else, which may cost you early termination charges, inability to port your number, etc..
Only BT have to allow you the choice of adding another company's broadband, LLU operators don't, the choice they offer is use us for line and broadband or use someone else completely, the irony is they got to the position of giving you no choice by exploiting BT position of having no choice but to offer line share, when they don't have to offer line share themselves

Wait until your broadband minimum term is reached and switch both. If you have LLU options on your exchange, then bundling the two services is invariably cheaper. There's no need to renew your BT line rental saver, it will just revert to monthly line rental when the LRS expires.

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like I'm stuck with BT line rental for now.
Never had any problems with their broadband or line, just trying to get a better deal. I don't like the layout of their bills though - unnecessarily complicated

Then cut a rentention deal with BT once your broadband is out of minimum term. Don't renew your LRS before this, obviously.
