  • That's not a normal colour for painting skirting boards at all, sorry but you decorator is a moron. You shouldn't have needed to give them explicit instructions not to paint the skirting the same as the walls because it's just common sense. If I were you I would at least try to get them to rectify the damage.

Edit: lovely colour by the way

i totally agree with fairy lights. fault lies with the decorator. no decent decorator paints the skirting board the same as the walls.

There is no contract between the landlord and the decorator.

no, but there is a contract between the tenant and decorator. so if the tenant didn't say "paint the skirting boards" then the decorator shouldnt have painted them.

i have never known a decorator paint skirting boards same colour as the wall + and never painted them satin/gloss even without asking

Just the hall (and stairs too I think?), so not actually too bad! I'm kind of worried about sanding though, since I might ruin the carpets. Would it be easier/better for the carpets to just buy new skirting?

In my last house (ie a Victorian one) I had to buy a bit of fill-in skirting at a couple of points. It wasn't the same as the original skirting (ie same style, but different measurements). I'm not sure whether its possible to buy some in exact same measurements (in fact I'd be pretty sure it wouldn't be...courtesy of metric measurements since then). Unless you can find some genuine Victorian skirting chucked out somewhere (but priced high...!).

A colour that may or may not be peoples tastes. Its fashionable now I know, but though I personally tend to like things to look fashionable, I don't like it and would definitely be wanting my skirting boards back to absolutely identical to the way they were originally.

I would definitely try to sort it out asap. Trying to get paint out of skirting boards that have curves and edges is a nightmare. I spent hours and hours trying to get rid of the white paint over the beautiful natural wood boards in my house (painted by the previous owner) and it was a painful task. Even then I couldn't put it back to its full natural condition. If after all that work a tenant painted all over it, I would be livid!

With cheap, pine, skirting I'd just assume the LL didn't want it painting because [a] you might do a bad job of it any future tenant might do a bad job of it [c] it's ongoing maintenance and a nuisance.

So, on that basis I'd look into getting it replaced. I'd confess to the LL and ask them what they'd prefer too, or what the specific reason was. e.g. it might be the LL's old dad did it and then since died so it's sentimental (well, you never know).
