student accommodation in London

Hi. My son is mid way through his first year at a Uni in central London. At the moment he is doing the daily commute from the South Coast but from September 2015 he would prefer to live in London. His uni does not offer student accommodation and the agencies they referred him to are expensive.
Does anyone have any money saving suggestions for accommodation as I have no idea how to help him search and have heard loads of horror stories? His loan won't cover travelling into London and accommodation so he would need to live somewhere close to London Bridge.
Thanks in advance.

If you search the Student forum using Advanced search to look for threads with London in the title a large proportion of them are about the cost of accommodation and may be of help to you.0

The further out from Central London he is the more likely he can find a cheaper rent. So it is a balance between rent and fares. Couple that with all people living in Central London will use public transport at some point and there may be more value in paying less rent and allowing for some transport costs.
Remember that he should notify student finance for his loan calculations for 2015-16 that he will not be living at home. That will increase the amount of finance he is entitled to.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
