BG to E.ON - suggested by Essex County Council - good idea?

I have been with British Gas for about 10 years I guess, maybe longer, on duel fuel.

Essex County Council are doing an energy swap awareness thing (not sure how to explain it, more info here.... cannot link, search for Essex Council Energy-Switch for more on it).

I signed up a few weeks ago and the other day they sent me an email saying the moving to E.On will save me £400 a year. My first thought was, "sounds too good to be true".

Here is a screenshot
(cannot add screenshots!) It says:
PERSONAL OFFER

E.ON collective switch offer
Fixed rate for 12 months - Monthly Direct Debit - Online billing
Your estimated current annual cost
Your estimated new annual cost

£1,560
£1,154
See Tariff Details See Personal Projection

Is there a catch? Or have I really been spending £400 a year too much?

I live in a 4 bed house, 2 kids, monthly gas and electric bills are £69 and £58.

Without knowing what tariff you are on and how much energy you use (in kWhs not spend), then only you will know. If you are on a standard variable tariff with BG then large savings are possible.

You can double check by using a site like theenergyshop.com or the CEC on this site. As I say, you do need to look at your old bills for ACTUAL meter readings about 12 months apart so that you can calculate your expected energy usage in kWhs.

That is interesting. Just ran it through theenergyshop and they say Scottish Power will save me £385 (with their Online Fixed Price Energy March 2016) and EON only £87!

I guess the bigger question is - how much do these Online Fixed Price Energy deals save?

OP - can you post the personal projection that you were given? what are your projected annual usage figures for gas and electricity in kWhs?

    Edit:

I should have said the E.oN v16 is a massive price increase over its version 14 and 15. Versions 14 and 15 were the companies reaction to other collective switches such as MSE.

EON just increased their fixed price tarif by around 27%, they were very competitive, it was much cheaper than their standard rate (others have posted that it was a "deal" to compete with the energy clubs, you probably have figures for before & after the increase)

The current best deal for me was NPower, with a saving of £7 a year :D

Trouble is, the pricing is so complex only you can tell what is best.

NPower are dirt cheap standing charge, but massively expensive per kWh, so if I could use less electricity, NPower would be cheaper, if I use more EON win.

I fail to see how having all these middle men raking off "profits" is better than when it was all one Nationalised industry with one price, but who am I to question modern business :rotfl:
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

It's all well and good them using estimated figures, but this helps nobody. What are the actual usage figures that you have for the last year ?

If those usages are correct and you were paying quarterly then, yes, you can easily get the same product for more than £400 cheaper. Savings slightly less if you are already paying with direct debit.

Of course, sorting out what is eating up all that electricity will bring even more benefits!
