android tablet stalls downloads

I'm re setting an Android generic tablet (Cube 10.1 u30 GT2) for a friend, 4.2.2, and although its Android software is up to date it stalls on updates like Talkback.

any suggestions? Ta.

Done factory reset, twice, makes no odds.
Partly its like its having trouble downloading updates and either cant do them at all or stalls at about 80%.
But anything in a browser displays fine...

It does seem that the Play store app is the problem, I've cleared its data and cache but it still stalls before the end of each download. Doesn't appear to be a sleeping issue as I've deliberately kept it awake while downloading.

I've now uninstalled Google Play updates and disabled Play services, the Play store now looks gothic but does now work, presumably until it does an update of itself.

Is it easy to upgrade this tablet to KitKat? Would it be possible to reverse?

I think its the play store thats the issue not the device.

If I have a bunch of updates and select update all then it wont update them. But update one at a time and its OK.

Sometimes it will get to downloading one app and it stalls and wont carry on.
