Poor survey

Hi

We bought a house just over a year ago and have since found a load of problems which I think should have been found on the survey.

The most serious of these is that the pipe into the house is lead - the lead pipes are very visible in the garage and where the stopcock is. The survey says he checked the stopcock but says nothing about the lead pipe is in!

I've been diagnosed with lead poisoning. Am i within my rights to make a complaint and if so what body oversees surveyors? They were appointed by our bank. the cost to have them replaced and my loss of earnings due to illness have been very high and a more accurate surveyors report would have lead to a different decision for us in going ahead with the purchase price (several issues not spotted)

thanks

Was it a valuation survey commissioned by the bank?

Are you sure that the water pipe is a major contributor to the lead poisoning? Millions of homes still have some lead plumbing, mine included, and their inhabitants are not suffering from lead poisoning.

You are, of course, within your rights to complain. whether you can prove your poisoning is a result of the pipes, and whether the surveyor should have identified the risk, are different matters.

Was the surveyor a member of RICS? See here.

    Or here.

Or of course, the courts are open to you.

What kind of survey? A 'Valuation'? Homebuyers? or full survey? See here.

why were you tested for lead poisoning and who diagnosed you?

Very very unlikely to have come the water supply.

As GM says, it will be difficult to prove it was caused by the pipes and even more difficult to get a judge to decide the surveyor should have warned you - i have lived with lead pipes all my life , and show no ill effects *wibble*
  • Yeah it's the pipes, I've had the water company out testing and investigating. Water supply has a high level of lead. it's also not the only thing he missed.

I'll make a complaint and see what happens
  • You haven't said what type of survey you had done. It will make a huge difference to the advice you'll receive.

If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
