Separating should I go cheaper or no claims?
Hi,
Thanks to those of you who helped me yesterday regarding buying a new car, due to seperating from husband. I have paid a deposit for a car I am really happy with. (For some reason I cant find my old post to thank directly).
Today I phoned the insurer's to my husbands car (LV) which I am a named driver - we have 9 years no claims. At first they wouldnt do anything about the no claims and basically said tough.
So I did a moneysupermarket search without any NC discount, and found a policy that was £140 cheaper, with ASDA insurance, which included all the bells and whistles such as breakdown cover, courtesy car etc.
I decided to call back LV just because I dont know what Asda insurance is like, and suddenly they decided they can also give me the no claims while keeping my husbands too. They have now given me a like for like quote which is only £50 more than Asda.
So I am a bit confused... Is it better to go for the cheapest option and have one year NC next year, or should I pay the extra £50 and have the bargaining power of 9 years no claims?
Help much appreciated - need to decide asap as due to collect car tommorrow or Saturday.
Thanks

I would definitely pay the extra £50 and get the 9 years no-claims bonus recorded onto your history. When it comes to renewing next time around you should get a much better quote from other insurers with the NCD.0

Thanks Reddwarf - probably should add that when I first rang LV and spoke to the person who said I couldnt transfer the NCB, I did say we were seperating. I said to her will it make any difference to the quote and she said just tell me what is true, so I said at this point we are married but not seoerated. The honest truth is that we are seperating but I haven't even told him yet I want it to be permanent.
In the further quotes/conversations I just said married. If I go with LV to get the NCD can this initial over honesty bite me in the bum?
Thanks :-)0 -
They may just be giving you an introductory discount rather than swapping your husband's ncd over to you.
In fact if the policy which you are leaving is in your husband's name they cannot simply take his ncd and give it to you.
So get it in writing you have this ncd otherwise you may be in for a shock and have just one year at renewal (assuming a claim free year).0 -
Probably time to tell your husband now you've sorted a new car, some insurance and declared it to the MSE community.0

I agree with Quentin. I'd be very surprised if you took the LV policy that you could then go elsewhere next year and declare 10 years' NCD.0

Hi Quentin,
Do you think they are just price matching then? In which case I would be better off with the cheaper one...
I asked if they were taking it off his, because I didnt want them to do thatm they said no, they are matching it.
I guess I need to phone them and ask the question - If I accept this offer will I ahve ten years NC at the end of the year?0 -
arcon5 - not in the situation I am in due to his behaviour, no, but thanks for your input...0

As above, it's either 9 years in writing or dump them for Asda.
I'd like to say dump them anyway, dislike the fact they couldn't do anything for you till you found cheaper, then all of a sudden we can do something...no ta, one bite of the cherry matey.
Best of luck for your future anyway.0 -
