Moving to Wales, help needed with education

we moved to Wales 3 years ago when my son was 6 just going into year 2. The class teacher he had then was excellent-she helped a great deal explaining when he didn't understand things but generally carried on with the lessons in Welsh. He did have one 2 one tuition in welsh one afternoon a week from a classroom assistant, which certainly helped him. At the end of the academic year his class teached called me to one side about his welsh to say that he had progressed so much with his welsh that there was absolutely no need for him to go the language school, which was the usual way with welsh learners, and that it would be to the detiriment of his welsh if he were to go. Children are like sponges and you will find so much help and assistance with your children's welsh-I think it is great my son is now 9 and fluent in 2 languages!
:o 2008 will be the year I finally get organised!:o
    :eek:Failed miserably-will try harder in 2010!
  • Re Turnaround Sue's message: anyone who makes their child attend a school in the UK where they are punished for speaking English must be crazy!!! I am Welsh but it is just that sort of madness which has kept Plaid Cymru from total power for years. Now that they have some sort of power sharing they are talking about forcing more Welsh on us. And yes, I am Welsh.
  • Speaking from experience, it's best to put your child(ren) in an all welsh school as soon as you move here. They will pick up the language easily and then will have more coice if they want to work around here (North Wales).

I think the 'detention incident' for speaking English is appalling, but in my experience is not the norm.

    Good luck a Iechyd Da.
