iPad or similar

I want to gift ipad or similar with internet to someone in rehab so that they can enjoy watching movies or some shows online or from stored. I was thinking of iPad versions but thought they should be less expensive alternative. Any suggestion ?

I would suggest a notebook sized Laptop... still portable, good screen size and decent speakers and a lot more useful than a tablet.
I've had an ipad mini and a nexus 7 but got rid in favour of a chromebook.

Does the unit have wireless internet? If not, it's going to be expensive to use mobile data to stream tv programmes.
Probably better having stored programmes, in which case you are looking for something with decent storage.
If you want to go down the tablet route, you'd be better off not buying an iPad, but getting an android or Windows tablet which can take an SD card.
A cheap laptop is a good option, as already mentioned.
You haven't mentioned any kind of budget at all, would help in people suggesting what best to go for.
