But they're your kids. Surely you do know what is essential for them to wear.

Some people might think 2 winter coats, and 4 pairs of jeans are essential, others not.

Guess it depends on how often you are prepared to wash the clothes!

Thanks for replying, that's why I wanted opinions to see what other people think are essential. Looking at their wardrobe they have too many clothes that are too small. So I don't want to waste money buying too many of the same thing. I think the 6 year old has a had a big growth spurt eeek

Matalan is also worth a look for reasonably priced children's clothing. When my daughter was little, she refused to wear trousers, so her wardrobe was mainly dresses. If you can find loose cotton jersey dresses, then buy them quite big and they will do as tops with leggings when they grow a bit. You will probably need more in the summer, because of the 6 week holiday. I wouldn't buy too many warm clothes currently, wait a month or two then buy summer clothes plus cardigan.

Quantities - I'd say 3-4 tops, 2 dresses, leggings and a skirt plus a cardigan would be a good start. See how it goes! You can get packs of plain t shirts (short or long sleeved) from Tesco or Next, which are better value than buying individual ones. Look out for coupons for Tesco clothing, as they often do £5 off when you spend £30 or similar. Don't forget socks, pyjamas, underwear, swimming costume (buy bigger than you think you need and it will last longer), it all adds up.

Coats wise if you can grab a 3 in 1 style then you'll be sorted all year. John Lewis had trespass ones reduced from £50 to £11 recently. Not sure if the deal is still on but worth checking out! TK Maxx sells trespass stuff too so worth a wee peek if you're passing.

Could always pick up a cute denim coat for the summer for much cheapness too for variety.

I have an obsession with pjs so my kiddos have far too many of them but I would think 3 pairs would be plenty, a couple nights wear out of each set.

Car boots are pretty good for cheap clothes too. :)

Oh JL still have the deal

My dd is 5 and wears a uniform for school - she has 2 tracksuits joggers/t shirt & top type ones (she is a tom boy) 2 pairs of jeans a few long sleeve tops to go with jeans (some are nicer for parties) - 3-4 jumpers and 2 hoodies - she had 2 dresses but has out grown them and won't buy another until she needs one - a school coat (school logo one) a winter thick coat and a body warmer. I get loads for her at the gap and next outlet - debnhams have good jeans when they have a sale on but get most of her everyday stuff from asda, better quality than tesco I find or TU at sainsbury when they have the 25% off xx

My girls have far and away too many clothes; my 5yo has clothes to grow into until she is 7 or 8. However, I recently looked at her wardrobe and realised that she has a couple of dresses that she has worn once, three unworn coats.

Her 3yo sister has a heaving wardrobe but 99% of items are hand-me-downs from her sister and cousins.

Apart from school uniform, shoes and underwear I don't anticipate buying more than one summer outfit, a cardigan, couple of pairs of leggings and a winter coat for next year. School uniform will likely be sourced from ebay next year and as her sister starts reception, she'll have a couple of new blouses and again make do with hand-me-down clothes.

Shoes, tights and underwear are the only things I buy brand new for them both.

Another way is to pick up the next size clothes from sales for the following year. My DD is nearly 7, in size 7-8. Now looking to buy 8-9 sized clothes in the sales for next year. You can really get some bargains.

When my dd was 5, due to space reasons in her bedroom, I reduced the amount of clothing she had. My quantities were 5 bottoms (jeans, leggings, skirt) and 8 tops, 2 hoodies, 1 'party' dress, 1 swimming costume, 10 pairs of socks and pants in addition to her school uniform.

Now she's almost 12 and obsessed with taking pics and videos of herself and buying new t-shirts, she announced recently that 80% of her wardrobe came from Primark.;) She is small in both build and height for her age though, so I don't have the issues with sizing mentioned here and also she only has an older brother, so am not looking to pass on.

With 2 girls, I would take that into account, that you might need to pay a little more in order to get 2 childrens worth of wear out of an item.

Matalan send me a voucher for around 20% off clothing every so often. New Look I have found some nice reasonably priced items in. I agree with the comment about Debenhams for 'party wear' I've paid around £13 for special dresses that originally started off around £30+ and I've also picked up the odd item in TKMaxx. These must make up the other 20% of dd's wardrobe. :rotfl:
