Insuring car that I'm trying to sell for my friend

Can someone please advise me?

My good friend is terminally ill with weks left to live and she asked me to take her old car and sell it.Her daughter cancelled the insurance as she thought I was going to keep the car and so become the new owner but I have since decided to sell it.
My problem is now that when I rang my own insurance co(I own a car of my own)to try to get it insured temporarily, they said I had to be the registered keeper. The car is now sat on my drive with a for sale notice on it,but as it's effectively uninsured,I am worried that if someone wants to take it for a test drive they would be breaking the law. This all seems a bit mad,can I get a temp cover note ,does anyone know of any companies that would cover me?
Also, how do car dealers overcome this whenthey are selling cars?I've bought cars in the past off dealers and the reg doc has never been in the dealers name, but the previous owner?

Thanks:beer:

As the car is now uninsured, has it also been declared SORN?

It's now an offense to have an uninsured car that isn't declared SORN. This is something the registered keeper would get a fine for, rather than the owner.

If someone has insurance cover that covers them to drive other vehicles with the owners consent might be able to take it a test drive on those grounds. A lot of insurance companies will only do this on the policy if the vehicle is already insured.

If you let them test drive it though and it is SORN then the registered keeper may also get a fine for using a SORN vehicle on the road

    Dealers have motor trade insurance.

Your friend should be insuring the car - and then cancelling it when the car is sold. I assume your friend is the registered keeper so needs to comply with Continuous Insurance Enforcement Regulations.
  • Thanks Retrogamer,as I said, the current RK has weeks left to live so I don't think she will be worrying about fines, but I take your point about SORN etc.Maybe some positive comments from people who know of insurance companies that will help us during this very difficult time? or from people this type of thing has happened to before....I'm sure I'm not the only person in this situation. Thanks

Thanks for useful info about dealers-again,don't think my friend is well enough or bothered enough about ANY regulations....think I'll just scrap the car,any more insensitive comments, don't bother.

Sorry, wasn't intended to be insensitive. I was trying to say that the policy should be in the name of your friend so a straightforward policy. You or her daughter could arrange this for her.

No. You can insure a car you don't own. Happens all the time, when people have cars on finance.

And I doubt op wants to complicate things for the dying friend in this way.

    Op -
    Either:
insure then cancel when its sold. Will cost you though, for the time you have the policy + cancellation fee.

    or

list it on ebay, auction style.

    or

go to a local car dealer and tell them you have a car for sale. Or even a website like webuyanycar and tell to them. You'll get less than market value of course but may be the easiest way

Of course you can but if you answer 'yes' to being owner and registered keeper then you have more options. The OP is looking for insurance in their name whilst not being owner or keeper so much simpler just to do it all in the friend's name.

Op doesn't need many options. Just basic road risk cover to meet continuous insurance rules and allow her to sell the car. Any tom !!!!!! and harry policy should suit, subject to cancellation fees.

Use the comparison websites. Easier than phoning around. It'll ask if you are the owner and keeper, you'll get the option to click no.
