Boiler problems! Please advise...

Hi all
Hoping to get some basic advice here...
Our Boiler has been misbehaving for a while, and it's now gone kind of kaput. I just hoped to get some advice on who to call, or if there's any diagnostics I can easily do myself... just don't want to get ripped off really! Having said that we have been recommended a local plumber, so hopefully he will see us right...
The boiler is a 'Fer Industrie' Copper Wall Mounted Gas Fired Combi Boiler. For a year or more, it has been uneven in its delivery of hot water. Sometimes you could run a bath, sometimes not - the flow would alternate between hot and cold while running, resulting in a lukewarm bath (sometimes). The central heating didn't seem to be significantly affected.
Now however, it's gone completely - the water goes warm briefly when run, then goes totally cold. The heating no longer works.
I wondered if this sounds like an obvious/common symptom to anyone?
Any comments much appreciated.
Alex

Could be the heat exchanger - if it is, it's gonna cost you.
My boiler had similar problems, only over a shorter period of time. Cost £225 to put right.
Hope it's something cheaper for you.0 -
